Those regulators are series pass which means they heat up more as more load is used so running with the headlight on will get it hotter than only running with the pilot light, but fear not, they are way more robust than all the Lucas crap that was taken out.

Just back from INOA.

Anyway, a permenant magnet alternator system puts maximum current into the regulator/rectifier all the time, the amount of current depends only on the RPM of the rotor, by engaging as many accessories as you can you relieve the reg/rec of dissipating the unused current, because the current/heat is being dissipated by the accessories elsewhere.

RoadScholar,

Jean is correct; he knows what he is talking about.

You (and I) thought of these as shunt regulators when they are actually series regulators.

The following is an excerpt from a tutorial on the Tympanium website

When the voltage across the battery rises above a regulator's set point (nominally 14 volts),
• the shunt SCR's are turned on as necessary to divert any excess available current away from the battery and/or its loads.
• the series SCR's are turned off as necessary to block any excess available current from passing to the battery and/or its loads.

Mounted my Podtronic in the battery compartment with a 4 bank fuse panel. The Shorei battery left enough room to enable a tidy setup.

That's tidy. Nice job.
