I was in buying longer 5/16 bolts to enable getting the crank sprocket off last Thursday, and got talking to a guy who rallied cars.
After leaving Kerikeri , my apparent leanness above idle got worse on the 850, so that on the way home, I fired a bit off the edge of a carb through the engine. Second time this has happened. { arnt we lucky those engines are missile proof ] I also mentioned that after fitting another plug, that flat spot disappeared.
He said they had popping back problems on their rally cars in the good old days and they found it was caused by "lazy" spark plugs. He went to Platinums in the early days when they first came out and never had problems. He also fitted them to his motorcycles and this fixed any starting problem he had. His bikes started first kick every time. He also reckoned that was the reason I broke the carb slide.
Now my bike started FIRST kick most times with that bloody lazy plug, and ran well when doing 45 mph or more. It wasn't till later on when the popping back problem got worse that I discovered it was the RHS doing the popping.

After fitting new plugs in Levin, my bike ran like a dream except the popping on overrun at no throttle which was caused by the missing bit of carb slide.

Its funny that the first thing I was asked at the rally when discussing the tuning problem was How are your Plugs. I said they looked ok [ which they did. They were running very clean, and my bike was the most economical of the 4 bikes on the trip from Hamilton to Wellington. [ 1954Norton International 500, commando 850 x 2, and a late model triumph twin ]

Hard won wisdom not wasted on me who buys good plugs in V8 packs. For some reason in my cases after some foul running issues electric to carb to water in fuel or oil leak crap the plugs tend to foul such a decent clean don't always cut it. With good enough plugs you can run dam decent even with the choke on and alu burning leaness.

I have been lucky so far as my bikes have always run clean. The occasional re-gapping is all that was ever required. Just goes to show you that you can be fooled by a clean looking plug.
