Piston circlip removal the hard way...

Managed to break off BOTH rings on the circlip, and the rest is wedged in there good. Don't seem to be able to get it out with curved needlenose pliers. Any tips would be most welcome!
 
Pin's out. I need to get the used/damaged circlip out. I wouldn't trust it in there.
 
Got it!

Had to grind the interior surface of the circlip - very carefully! - to weaken it. Was then able very easily to punch it out with a drift.

Thought for sure I was gonna have to buy new pistons. Really psyched it worked!
 
don't feel bad... I can't get the huge one out of the clutch basket... I'll prob have to break it lol
 
Do you mean the large spiral one that holds the diaphragm spring in place? Have you taken all the pressure off using the official tool or an aftermarket equivalent (I can't imagine doing this job without that tool)?

Once you've done that, it should pry out very easily with a small screwdriver.

oh, no, I meant the one in the back of the clutch basket holding the bearing in...prob both w my luck. I have some reversible snap ring pliers, but they aren't wide enough. Looked around town, and haven't found any big enough... I was thinking of using 2 of the points on some forks :roll:

Craftsman makes a nice reversible snap ring pliers that should work - I'm pretty sure that's what I used on mine. It's about $13 - #47384. I've got an older Craftsman snap-ring pliers with replaceable ends, but it has a limited range.

Sure wish I had them before I tried to take my gudgeon pin circlips out! Ah well....
