Several years ago I had a set of 932 carbs sleeved (slide and body). I believe the shop that did this repair was in Washington State. I have lost the contact information. I am currently rebuilding a 74 Interstate and need the carbs sleeved. Does anyone know the shop in Washington that does this repair, or another shop that offers the same service?

Additionally: As an option, is their any feedback on the new generation Amals? Are they worth the money , or is sleeving the old units more effective?

Thanks in advance
John

Hands down, the new Amal Premires are the way to go. Stay up floats, anodized slides and a host of other improvements to boot.

I got a set and have not regretted it.

The accessnorton store has the best price on them.

That is probably the one you are thinking of. The new carbs have gotten pretty good reports. They are even available thru the store on this site. As for what is the best cost vs performance ratio...I dunno. The new carbs are not that expensive that I would look over my old carbs pretty close for other wear and tear. Probably if you paid for a resleeve, bought new floats jets and needles you would be getting close to new carb prices. I haven't added it up, but I would before I decided. The new carbs have anodized slides and a "premier needle jet". I was looking for info on what exactly that is but of course Amal has a brand new web site (newer and "slicker") and I can't find the information any longer!

It does add up quickly, sleeving, slides, floats, rebuild kit.... You are almost up to a new set.

The slides are what is sleeved so no new slides required.

+ 1 on the new Premieres. Got a set off the store here and have been well satisfied.

Thanks for the replies

I accessed and read the technical brief on the new Amals in the Access Norton Store. I like the hard anodized coating and improved float assembly.

I will be purchasing a set for my 71 750 Roadster, and my current 74 850 Interstate project.

I am looking at the following sets. (I believe I have picked the correct sets for my applications)

store/amal-carbs/amal-mk1-premier-concentric-carburetter-set-193.html
store/amal-carbs/amal-mk1-premier-concentric-carburetter-set-192.html

Standard jetting looks good to me. I am riding stock units and have not modified for high performance. I ride mostly at sea level, and currently have my pilots set on the second circlip groove.

Any additional comments would be appreciated before I place the order

Thank you very much

I spoke to Mike Gaylord a few years ago and he told me that he had retired. Mentioned something else, too, about the liability issues of sleeving Amals.

Before you make your decision, this link may be worth reading. It briefly discusses the superiority of the way Mike Gaylord used to sleeve Amals:

Here's the URL to a previous thread on this board that discusses other companies that provide the service:

Triton engineering in Canada sleeves using brass, which would be the most fun to look at when you're making adjustments.

There were some people on this site reporting problems with the new Amals not fitting. I believe the issue was the width of the flange facings being too wide, which caused them to interfere with each other when mounted. You should definitely find that thread and understand what you're getting into before ordering.

For what it's woth my sleeved 932's (Lund) are going on 14,000 mi. now with absolutly no additional wear on slides/bodies. The downside of course is time in shipping out to Washington, the machining time, and shipping back. If you don't have a spare or borrowed set to use in the meantime you ain't riding. Obviously if you order new carbs you can muddle through with what you have 'til they arrive.

The only issue I know of, and you could PM Jerry regarding the Amals from the store for an answer as to whether it has been rectified, is that there is a boss on the carbs that hits on its twin when installed on a Commando. It is because they are so close together. A file remedies it unless some of them are now done before shipping.

Hi Russ,

They have addressed that issue. These carbs are very well made compared to the old non premier ones. I try to keep about 10 sets of carbs in stock. If I dont have any in stock It takes me about a week to get them or any other Amal, Weber, Zenith or SU carbs/ parts.

Cheers
