Sir Eddy Edward Bilton-Smith's Norton twins [died Sunday Oct. 28, 2012]

This ain't about other classic motorcycles nor just anything motorcycle related so leave in here with proper Norton twin focus. Sent me by Doug McQuire a long neighbor of Kenny Dreer and Sir Eddie in Oregon. hobot

A lot of people have heard of the old Geezer,,, "Sir Edward",,, often
because of improbable stories and outright bragging about his feats of
engineering, machining skills and un-precedented racing skills both on the
track as well as building and fettling race machines,
I thought many on the other lists might like a gander at some vintage pix of
Sir Ed at speed at one of the many racetracks he once competed on,, in this
case Westwood BC Canada,

If you look carefully in a few of the pix he is racing sans googles,, yes
the blighter rode so fast they flew off,,
Also in another picture,, yep, thats the front wheel coming up airborne
coming out of a corner,
How many Norton twins can accomplish that? Well onto the Ton and power to
spare to bring the wheel up.

This wasnt a 750, this was a 650 Norton twin, One of the very first Norton
Manxman sold on the west coast of the US, Later Sir Ed bought a Manx single
rolling chassis and switched over the 650 twin into that presumably to gain
a weight savings,,

Eddy also drag raced and did quite well on this bike, and he also road raced
in California, Seattle Washington and his home track Portlands PIR Raceway,
at that time in the early 1960s was still on the original streets of the old
Vanport housing estate that washed away in the great flood, keep in mind the
main straight had a wooden bridge at the end of it and then you entered a
corner, Exciting stuff..

Re: Edward Bilton-Smith's Norton twins

Love these shots hobot, thanks for posting. There was one spot on the Westwood track where the fastest bikes were prone to wheelieing. It was at the back of the track on the end of the long straight where you could get up to maximum speed on a slight up grade. There was a peak where the grade changed and went down hill just before the markers where you had to brake for the hair pin at the bottom. It was know as "Deer's Leap" and I believe you can see it in the 1st colour photo taken from the hair pin looking back to the peak. I can't say for sure this is what spurred the wheelie but it would be a compliment if it did because only the fastest bikes could get airborne there.

Re: Sir Edward Bilton-Smith's Norton twins

I've got some killer looking finned rocker covers made by an older man up near Portland. They look a lot like the ones in one of those pics. Hmmm... Someday soon I'm gonna figure out how to reduce and download photos from my photobucket acct.

Re: Sir Edward Bilton-Smith's Norton twins

Yes the machined finned cover sets are Sir Eddy's work to help support his land speeder project and beautify our Commandos and may not be available at some point along with Sir Eddy who's in late 70's and comma inducing deer/head impact like 7 year ago.

Re: Sir Edward Bilton-Smith's Norton twins

I've never seen an old style road racing machine pull a wheelie, unless the weight distribution is wrong. They usually spin the back wheel long before that.

Re: Sir Edward Bilton-Smith's Norton twins

I don't know about the old bikes, but I've seen new bikes do that in IOM footage.

Re: Sir Edward Bilton-Smith's Norton twins

Kenny Molyneux also had a 650 Norton in a Manx frame. He set the lap record at Westwood with that bike. Ive met Kenny and I regularly ride with a couple of his cohorts, Murray Neibel and John McDougall. John also raced at Daytona. Murray often won the 250 class on his x6, the 350 class on his Manx. The unlimited class belonged to Kenny.
I ride with these guys, they are still quick.

Steve, the photobucket link is not of motorcycles and the other link no workie either.

Re: Sir Edward Bilton-Smith's Norton twins

Thats not a deers leap lift off, that just plain old Norton power lifting the front end, and at good speed too!
Modern motorcycling, the name in the photo link hobot provided, is my friend Murray Neibels company. If you go directly to his site he has a good collection of historic Westwood racing photos under the history tab. Murray raced quite successfully there as well.

Im afraid I have very bad news, Sir Eddy tragically passed way this
afternoon. (Ed Bilton-Smith)
His health wasnt very good the last few years and while he kept
motoring on, he suffered a fall and injury that was too much.

I will post more details at a later date, The family has asked for
privacy and his son asked that if you have any issues, pending
business or anything else to please contact me directly. I will
address it individiually.

Eddy had a wonderful support system of family, friends and his church,
Im sure there will be some sort of services soon

He sent me an email photo of another major engine part this am dammit.

Well that's certainly the shits. Condolence to Eddie's family and friends.

I was to meet up with him as part of the "Not So Great Pacific Northwest Annual Ride" but could not make it.

Godspeed Eddie.

This is truly sad news to hear.. He was a real craftsman. I for one will miss seeing his creations.

Edddy was a speed demon form the get GO!

He's was still riding about 6-7 yrs ago when a deer strike put him in comma and that is what sent him down hill. His balance to ride was ruined and affected the neck posture to decay further, till this last stumble shocked the brain stem to death. His dream was to ride his 11,000+ rpm Norton twin into history.

Such a loss, Hobot ,but in what tragic manner? or did you mean as a loss per se- it is tragic?, maybe you should get some of his ashes to put in a Maney foundry casting pot?- Or run through a Norton intake?-Or eddy current supression ring?
Not too soon - is it? , Believe me, I mean no disrespect.

Life is sur-real short existence so best get what ya can then its gone. A big reason I am the way I come across I know I only got so many weekends left and don't want to be hurting or a cripple waiting them out. All life styles are fatal so safe journeys. Hope everyone snagged the machined trim pieces while they lasted too.
