Side stand problem

I am helping a friend build a 1967 P11. We are having trouble getting the side stand to mount properly. There is a notch in the primary cover that seems to be the place where the upper nut of the kick stand mount would fit, but there is a nut on the gearbox cradle that prevents the side stand to fit. What am I doing wrong?

Contemporary photos show side stand clamp mounts below the drain plug, as the case is generic Matchless that cutout may have been for another frame, perhaps..

The primary case "notch" does not relate to P11 side stand mount point.
Side stand mounts in a position as in your first photo.
I remember forming shims to place behind this mount, between engine plate and split mount, to find a best angle for a "veteran" P11.

There are several length Matchless/Norton side stand props that will fit this mount, but they will be too short.......some aftermarket are too long!

That frame rail can also get a bit greasy, so +1 on padding out the mounting so it abuts against the engine plate..

when we move the sidestand to the position that you mention we cant get the top nut on it It seems to bind on the primary case. It there a special shortened nut? or stud?

To be honest it's nigh on 30 years since I did that job and 20 since I owned the bike.. Was the stand not on the bike before rebuild?? I can't remember if the ruse was to fit the top fastener with the clamp further up the frame rail then slide it down before fitting the second. Hopefully a current owner can jump in sometime..

The bike arrived all disassembled. It has been sitting in boxes for 10 years

I own a P11, and it's in my garage. Can't help though. Mine was in boxes 46 years ago. It came without a side stand, or clamp for one. In my infinite wisdom, I came up with a solution. Not a good solution for a restoration though. I welded a tab onto the frame further back closer to the foot peg, and put a short aftermarket side stand on it. Restoration snobs would have heart failure if they saw it. It's chrome to boot. Yikes!!

Anyway, hope you have the side stand in one of those boxes, because as mentioned you may not be able find an original readily available. And the prices are outrageous. Found one at a US retailer Eurojamb.com. $250

There were thinner nuts in my pile of parts. I'm not sure of the thread or size though. On my P11 the thinner nuts are being used on the motor trans bracket just in front of the swing arm on the primary side for additional rear chain clearance. Start digging in the boxes.

Enjoy the project.

"Probably the most complicated job on a P.11 is putting the engine/gearbox unit back into the frame and assembling the eleven spacers in the correct position. If this is not exactly right, the engine will be out of line and the rear chain will foul. Also the prop-stand bracket will not abut against the left hand engine plate and will swing round, causing the machine to fall. "

Citation from Paul Morin's writeup on the P11.

I believe your 3rd+4th picture shows the correct position. Have you read the other thread on P11 sidestands?

Yes thank you, of course I searched the forum for previous posts. The pictures arent that clear. I also looked a lot P11 magazine articles that I have. THe side stand is very tight. Access the uppermost nut is impossible. We pretty much have to lift the engine for any adjustment. It barely comes back into position. I asked to see if anyone has any insight or tricks to deal with this

Is Mr Morin still with us? Had many a conversation with him back in pre internet days....

My P11 is still in boxes, so no first hand experience. I trust the question about location has been answered. As to access for tightening (assuming you are using the prescribed parts), I suggest fitting the s/stand clamp prior to fitting the primary inner cover.

I suggest you ask the secretary of the NOC. Anthony Curzon should know as well. He is a member of the AJSMOC.

Yes, thank you.. I know Anthony is still thick with the NOC too... I just try to steer clear (of NOC) though...

The P11 prop stand mount has a bolt (03-3158) fastener for the upper lug mount and the special stud with the spring mount on the lower. The prop stand for the featherbed frame Nortons uses a stud and nut in both locations. Otherwise the stands are identical.

I mount the prop stand lug before mounting the inner primary case.

So sorry,
something escapes me.
The bike in the picture is not a P11 but a N15 (or G or 33) with the Matchless duplex frame that has the side stand bracket welded on the lower tube.
The side stand bracket in the picture is for a P11 but doesnt work well on the other hybrids.

Piero, the frame pictured is no doubt a P11 one. Look again.
