Side cover question.

On a 1970 Roadster, I have the side covers pictured below. Are these the correct ones ?.

LH side, happy this is all looking fine.

RH side:

What does the bottom grommet slide onto ?.

Where do the two bolts on the top bolt into ?.

looks like a non matching pair of covers.
The RH one looks like a roadster type, and should fit neatly over the oil tank, bolts go into threaded recess in the top of the oil tank. The hole at the bottom, in my case, has an offcut of oil line through it and is just a friction fit.
The LH cover looks like an S model, i haven't seen one of those up close.

The 1970 model has a different oil tank to the later models.

Where/how does the 1970 model mount its covers ?.

Josh that oil tank cover would fit a latter style frame without the older type central oil tnak like yours. The top two holes screw into the top of the tank, the bottom hole should have a little snubber gromet, double ended. It stops the cover rattling around at the bottom. I am working on a mates 70 ish model with the same oil tank as yours. I can take some shots when I get the covers back on. I think the right cover is mounted with a top front bracket, much the same as the left side, but I do not know if this is a bodge up or how they should be?

Have just had a look in Roy Bacons Twin Restoration which shows a right side pic only, and its not a bodge thats how it should be for that year.

Josh, for the oil tank shown in your photo you need a different right hand side cover that is a mirror image of the left one that you have with the ignition switch hole in it. the side cover you need fits with a grommet on a pin on the battery tray at the lower rear and a grommet at the top on a separate mounting bracket with pin, that bolts to the rear frame plate at the base of the large spine tube. The front top mount is a dzus fastener making the panel removable for access to a tool tray in the panel and also access to the battery. Take a look at photos of Dog T's recent '69 S phoenix rises again' restoration thread, he has some detailed shots of the side panel mounting arrangement.

It's like DaveM says. Here's a picture of mine, the red arrows point to the pins that go into the grommets at the back of the panel and the dzus fastener at the front. Both panels mount the same. Some have Dzus fasteners both left and right, mine had dzus on RH and spacer and nut and bolt on LH. Your LH panel is for a later model, it should be a mirror image of the RH except without the switch hole.
