Hi guys, I have a late model Atlas that I am working on for a friend. He has a new timing cover with two ports above the oil pressure relief valve. One of these ports is threaded and accepts an allen grub screw. I know from reading the Commando workshop manual that this blanking plug should be fitted to Commandos but I am not sure if this applies to the Atlas. This Atlas has a pressure oil feed to the rockers via a banjo in the timing cover underneath the oil pressure relief valve. So my question is: Should I fit this blanking plug or not?

Was the later cover on the bike and functioning before you got it to work on?

I have the later timing cover on a 1967 P11, but I have to be honest my P11 engine is not typical. If I have to pull my timing cover off to give you a good answer I'll defer to one of the other members. If my boxed up stock P11 cover has the feed to the rockers below the pressure relief valve, I'll check to see it the blanking screw is present tomorrow. It is the 4th of July over here in the USA and I'm celebrating. Could be obvious by my answer. :)

Checked on a timing cover from a -68 650SS. According to 1966-1967-1968 parts book, same for Atlas. G15CSR and P11 different. Cover Part #25187 but casting number on inside is 25186.
It has one threaded hole under pressure relief valve, used for top supply. No other holes in rear of timing cover.
Also checked on a -69 Commando, appears to be same cover in the rear.

The 1967 P11 timing cover looks like this:

The original P11 timing cover has a grub screw in it as you can see. I am using a Commando timing cover. I have added a few holes to my P11 timing side crank case to help with breathing and oil drainage back into the sump. Similar to but not the same as the modifications people were doing to Combat cases in the late 80's.

The Atlantic Green Commando timing cover images show a grub screw, and the additional oblong hole out of the pressure relief chamber. That is what mine looks like as well.

Stupid me. Misunderstood where to look. Thanks to Schwanys pictures checked again. Yes the grub screw is there. Even peened in place. Must be there.
To me it looks that difference between P11 and Atlas/650SS is angle of tacho drive.

First, my sincere apologies for not responding to all your helpful answers. Thank you! I didn't get any notifications of a reply so I assumed there were none! In the meantime, I called Gareth at Norvil (who supplied the timing cover for my friend). He said to check the rocker spindles. If they are scrolled, it's a low pressure oil feed and grub screw stays out. If it has a flat machined on it, it's a high pressure feed and the grub screw is fitted. However, the cover,, although brand new, is not satisfactory. The 5/16" BSF thread in the cover was helicoiled and which disintegrated, leaving the remainder deep in the hole. I had to very carefully grind it out with a carbide burr. I then made a fixture to guide the tapping drill straight and fortunately, the new helicoil works. Also, the cover is not flat. I checked it with some plate glass. And, it's too shallow and squishes the conical seal on the oil pump too much, so I had to make and fit a second gasket to shim the cover out. It will do for the moment, until the original cover comes back from having an anti-wet-sumping valve fitted.
