Hi everyone-

Re-installing a magneto on my new-to-me Atlas 750 engine, so the timing cover is off. Noticed the seal here has no circlip, where there is one on all engine diagrams and references I've found. Was there a type of seal which didn't need one? Anyone have any ideas before I just stick one in? It does seem very well press-fit into place. The bike ran this way under the previous owner, so I tend to think it's OK...but just checking.

Atlas timing side crankshaft seal?

thanks for any assistance...

Press fit will do. The seal can't go anywhere. If it seems too loose, a little blue LocTite should do the trick.

Thanks! Seems really solidly-seated. But I'm not an engineer, so I like to do what the book (and/or those with experience, in the case of an old British motorcycle) says to do.

As the clip is cheap I would fit one, thats what the designer intended. If the oil pressure peaked and pushed the seal forward the pressure to the crank could be lost. crank seize, rod breaks ,barrels smashed, cases holed, pistons etc, Are atlas motors cheap in the USA? . any locally sourced clip would work .

Oops! I had forgotten there is a circlip groove existing there. By all means, use it! As Norton Bob says, it is cheap insurance.

Ah. I was just wondering if there were two types of seal, one requiring a circlip and one not, or some later modification that made use of a circlip either unnecessary or incorrect.

There's a clip on the seal in my cutaway timing cover...I can just move it over to where it'll do some good.
