Thanks for that, Matt - very interesting. There are a few home made G50 Matchless motors being raced arouns here. A friend bought one, and found it would not perform until he centred the flywheels in the crankcases.

Gratuitous Special photo-

If there is the need to go more than 350- 400 miles in a day, I get pretty sore on the Commando or on a standard Vincent. This is very comfy, and light to toss around-

The only thing I don't like about this bike is that it doesn't belong to me. The rims look bad ass. As for riding 400 miles in a day, my liver requires lubrication long before then.

Fantastic bike as an all rounder, easy to work on also.

You never had the engine apart, did

As said, easy to work on that included a complete strip down for new shells, rings and primary chain etc.
Setting up the bevel towers on Ducati's is a little more time consuming but no harder.
Those days are near gone now with the modern generation and a good part of the old, of course the cross over to PC's and fuel injection was not that hard either.
I would suggest anyone who thought the CBX (1047cc) was a complex engine would be better off staying in the kitchen. :D

As a former owner of 3 CBX's including a frame off completer resto of an early '79, I concur that the CBX is not more complicated than any other 'multi', there's just more stuff. In fact, ease of maintenance was clearly observed by me one day when my buddy wanted to check the valve clearances on his mid 1990's Hinckley Sprint which uses Honda CB750/900/1100/CBX shim over bucket shims. I have a fully stocked CBX shim kit, so I rode over to his place to help him and check mine. While we waited to let my X cool down, we proceeded to take his apart and measure his,,,turns out he needed to change 1 shim. I started to break open the CBX cam cover, which involves detaching the top of the engine from the frame, and laying it down abit. At this point, checking all clearances, it took literally 2-3 minutes each shim change with the CBX bucket lever tool which depresses the two buckets down to click out the shim, and after checking measurements, clicked the new shim in. The Hinckley bucket depressing tool is a joke and my buddy was almost ready to light a match to his bike. The big CBX was closed up and running when he still was bolting on bodywork.

As for engine problems,. the main issues they had was the dreaded #1 conrod bend, caused by putting the bike on it's side stand, where the fuel in the other 5 carbs would drain to the lowest carb and fill up #1 cylinder, and bending the rod on startup. Of course, alternator brushes and alternator sprag plates were weak engineering feats, as was the nylon swingarm bushings on the '79 model. The early bikes handled terribly, and the '79 big cam model averaged 25mpg, but the engine was smooth as silk and 7k-9500k rpm honk is addicting, simply a lovely engine.

Whatisit ?!

Some sort of Onda Shadow, with a 'pushrod' kit ?
VLX600 ??
Or smaller, with a 'v-twin' kit AND 'pushrod' kit ?

At least it will be easy to find in the parking lot.
Not my cup of tea, but cruisers and bobbers are popular these days.

yep Rohan VLX600.
I saw the now rare "pushrod" kit for sale about 2 yrs ago and grabbed it , not usually the sort of thing I'd do.

Currently other that the Norton I have a couple of Honda's

Lots of really interesting bike on this thread. Here are some of my non-Norton street bikes.

This is the Frankenbike. I fit a 1986 Yamaha FZ600 engine in a 1986 Honda 600 dual sport chassis. It's a real hooligan bike, and great fun to ride. I think my total investment in the bike is around $500, and that was kind of the point of building it.

This is my 1978 Kawasaki 650. It's pretty original, except for the front brakes. The originals were hopeless, so I fitted some more modern rotors and calilpers.

This is my 2005 MZ Baghira. Another fun ride. I just like big singles (and twins, of course!).

This is my 1995 MZ Saxon Tour. I originally built it as a singles class racer, but later converted to street legal. The engine is a 660 cc fully built Rotax race engine with all the Ron Wood bits. The bike is very light, so a really good power/weight ratio. My grandson loves this bike.

This is my 1981 Yamaha XV920 with sidecar attached. It's down right now with an engine problem, but I expect to have it up and running again soon. Just something different for grocery shopping. I've got a couple other XV920s, but neither are rideable at the moment.

This is a 1975 T160 I bought a while back, that I'm getting back into running condition. I'll probably sell it when it's finished, or maybe even sell it sooner as a project for someone else to finish. Been debating whether to continue with non-stock lighting and switches, or to go for a more original restoration.

I recently bought a nice Honda CX500T turbo bike, but had to tear it down a bit to fix an oil leak to the turbo, and didn't take any pictures before. I'm putting it back together now, and will take some pictures to post when it is done.

That's pretty much all the street bikes. I also have some dirt bikes and road racers, but this thread seems to be more street oriented, so I've left them out.

Got the Honda turbo bike back together today and took some pictures. Nice bike, but heavy.

Here's a picture of my R3 Hyde Harrier mentioned a while ago on another thread. 988cc with all the usual goodies in the motor. It was too good though, it went, steered, stopped and generally felt like a '90s GSXR! I sold it. The body work looks black in the pics, but it was all carbon fibre.
I got carried away. Again.
