I don't know exactly how to describe this... when going through the gears, my 72 Commando shifts kind of rough. It's like I'll push or lift up on the shifter with my foot and there's not always a definite click.... sometimes I have to push a couple times before the gear changes. I remember having to bend and adjust the return spring (as per Old Britt's article) after having the outer cover off earlier in the year. I'm thinking maybe just buying a new spring instead of messing with this one. Do these springs always need to be adjusted when installing a new one or should they work right out of the box?

Put it in neutral and push it up and down the drive.Robb2014 said:

Take pulse after each session. Just kidding. You should be able to push it around almost as easy as if in neutral. If not, it's probably dragging.

my belt drive accumulates dirt & crud inside the drum at the OD of the plates - inside the max diamter of the drum and needs occasional cleaning. Otherwise the plates hang up & it starts to drag. Its a PIA. Do all belt drives do this? I'm trying drilling a bunch of holes in the drum for the crud to escape - seems to need a lot of small holes - helps but stilll needs occasional cleaning.
