On my 2016 Norton 961 Mk II I am having a new problem with shifting up into third and fourth gear, where the selector wont engage unless I pause 1-2 seconds before moving the shifter pedal up. I am assuming this is an issue with the clutch, although the other gears select just fine. Where should I start with trouble shooting this? Thx, Ken

Have you checked that the small shifter lever on the primary cover is not touching the casing when shifting up?
I would also check that the front sprocket is on tight, as the factory lockwashers are not great.
Have you tried clutchless changes to see if they are any better?

Thx for the suggestions. yes the small shifter lever is not touching. Also tried the clutchless changes tonight and the shifting does happen ok.

Ok, then for peace of mind I would look at the primary sprocket, it may be loose. If that proves to be ok, it sounds like you need to have a look under the primary cover. It's not unheard of for the centre clutch nut to come loose.

So I checked the front sprocket which was tight. then got into the primary cover, and confirmed that the centre clutch nut is tight. I did find however that the clutch springs are only 50mm which is shorter than the service limit of 52mm. could this be the issue causing the shifting issue?

Did you say that the clutch less upshifts were ok ? Are you able to see if you can shift through the gears manually with the rear tire off the ground. ? While you do this pay particular attention to the shift linkage movement. Check for any play or sloppiness in the action. I would also consider replacing the fiber and steel clutch plates. If for some reason the plates were not releasing fast enough during shifting maybe. Don’t neglect to soak the new plates in motor oil overnight. Also see if your clutch hub has the holes drilled in it .

Well, as you have it open it would be prudent to change the springs at least I think. Those parts should be easy to obtain as they are the same as widely used Yamaha items. It’s also worth checking that the rivets securing the clutch body to the driven backplate are secure. To do that, grab the body with both hands and try to rotate in in each direction. If you see or feel play between them, further investigation would be required (it may move very slightly as there are Cush drive springs in there). Also worth checking the security of the starter ring gear while you are in there. There are lots of threads on these issues on here so worth using the search facility up on the top right.
This is an excerpt from the alternate parts list, which should help…

Clutch Parts

  • Friction Plates EBC CK2255 (same as Yamaha TDM850 & other Yamaha)
  • Springs EBC CSK126
  • Complete Clutch Set EBC SRK51 (Steel Plates , Friction Plates , Springs)
  • Clutch holding tool EBC CT008SP (same as Yamaha FZR750)

I have used the complete set EBC SRK51 and it works very well.

Thanks, that is very helpful!!

I also fitted the EBC full clutch kit and the Oberon upgraded slave cylinder - genuinely like having a new bike. Highly recommend both

Just ordered the EBC clutch kit. I have it stripped down to the shift mechanism assembly and noticed that there is too much play between the bronze bushing of the shift mechanism and the aluminum casing. Probably should try to replace the bushing. Also do I need to get into the transmission to check the selector forks?
