Seventeen inch rear wheel advise?

After looking for extreme sports specialized tires only 17" seems to offer the range and long term production so had given up on 16" & 16.5". A smaller OD tire places its wideness further back in swing arm flair and with 520 chain might be able to clear 150 size. So what would one look that's not a 6"+ wide rim & accepts 19 mm axle?
Would also allow snagging smaller used race tires to use up learning smoking stunts. Would moderate looking at at Peel's unusual rasied arse end. Still think I'll like skinny tall tires best for the pavement tossing and daily life.
 
i have run my commando with a 17" back wheel but it weaved all over the road at high speed i then went to an 18" and it got better then i went to a 19"it was then perfect this is with no other changes to the machine ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,baz
 
Ugh baz was hoping not to hear that pensiveness but I'm more interested in the weirder - wilder stuff, hill climbs, trails on loose steeps and sand dunes for the 17" rather than pavement handling as got that so solved conquered on skinny tires I'm sticking with normal Cdo size for their better grip on edges of normal Cdo wheel sizes. Did have in mind 17" speed rating for a sprints and land speed test but your report gives me the willies.

I'm finding rims 17"x 3.5, 4.0, 4.5" wide but thing 3.5" should do it for maybe 140-150 width. Don't want vintage spokes to go tubeless.
 
As you lower the rear end of the bike it can tend to self-steer more in corners. Between certain limits this is safe, however as Baz has found out the bike can become unstable at high speed. Fat tyres front and back tend to make the steering more sluggish, however you might be correcting an error with an error, and when you cross a handling threshold the bike might grab you by the throat. If the bike ever goes into the dramatic tank-slapper you will sometimes survive by not fighting it, grabbing the tank and keeping the bike upright until it all calms down.
 
Oh Crap Alan, you flesh that out frighteningly well and describes what I so disrespect about fatso tires in rigid frames on edges but not bad in bee lines such as flat footed crumble wall drag slick or Donald Duck paddle tires or balloon knobbles for floatation in bottomless pits of polished pea gravel or soggy deep sod and snow and loose as snot stones and leaves Mt sides. Next Peel will be a looloo to learn to handle again with many changes in everything But my ever loving always uncannty flabbergastingly FABulous non linear compliant Watt's like Helm joint radius rod stabilizer links - plus a unique 4th swash plate set remains the same scabbed together proof of concept proto types. I have had 3 things and a half fast cycle with power to weight made hooking it up a challenge. Much as I brag on Peel she's was the above half fast thing whose main advantage was not having to slow up as much as anything else. Just needs a good boost in the butt to mimic my P!! and maybe then some. Watch them hill climber they are like the 1st air craft throttles on/off toggle switch and hot ones don't stall out catching back up like climbing up on prop power alone, rocketing with rooster tail thrust reaction. On stuff loose enough to dig into and throw back it can be significant addition to acceleration and vector ballistic steering w/o much attention to silly forks front tire freaking out barely in touch with this level of reality anyway.

In other words I can't imagine wanting a 17" fatso with distorting edge drop offs, wrong way shaped patch walk abouts with sudden disappearance acts, especially for anything past their effective 45' ish lean angle limits. Just for more motive force in special situations that ain't road racing. Yeah I know fatso tires famous for over 65' lean angles, BFD they are having to go so slow dangerous doing that seems like gynkanna parking lot cones to weave around on ski edge like tires till clear of the clusters and can really let Peels hair out. Likely have to blast across the rough in field and over some walls into parking lot drain ditches after wards to get some decent tremble of adrenalin satisfaction.
