RIP Phil

I'n no monarchist either, but we have a system that works and has been proven to do so (Gough's double dissolution!).
The republic referendum was put to the people without stating what the new model was nor how it would work. Essentially the pro-republicans were saying "trust us!" - like bloody hell!
Good relationships are built on trust. That is the reason we Australians are unhappy with the Chinese at present - we now feel we cannot trust them.
About Gough's double dissolution. The Queen takes public sentiment into account when she makes decisions. In Australia, Rupert Murdoch manipulates public sentiment. So it really does not matter what system you have, the result is the same It is just that with a monarch, there is a hope that sense might prevail.

The funeral was a sight to see (on the telly ).

I was amused by the gunfire every minute during the procession, first a bang and a couple of seconds later a bell tolled. Couldnt help thinking 'good shooting lads!'

Yes, it was very good shooting , they didn't hit anything as they were firing blanks!

The Kings Troop the Royal Horse Artillery used to be based near my work, seeing the horses being ridden and towing (?) the guns on their carriages was a frequent sight. Very impressive. Even more so when they were in their full uniform dress. (if thats the right word for it)

Now Phil- the prince of speed -really is world class , and fortunately he is still with us..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrFRmNVp00k
