Anyone ever used the RGM strengthened gearbox shell, #050126?
Would like to hear opinions and see photos of the reinforced areas if possible.

Thanks!

Email Roger at RGM. He'll help you out.

Spoke to Lawrence at RGM today and these aren't in stock, would also like to see one.

I recently bought a new gearbox shell direct from Andover and it was a good item. You could see where there was extra metal added in various areas,Fit and finish is good.Came with the studs but they were not fitted and bushes fitted , ready to use as well.

I got my strengthened case from Mick Hemmings (along with the LSB upgade) but I have not used it yet.

How do they strengthen it to preclude the crack which always seem to appear between
the two bearing bores? That is seemingly an unfixable flaw.

July 2011 I emailed RGM about their strengthened g/box shell due to mine having a loose sleeve gear bearing and got the following replies:

Dear Graeme

The heavy duty gear box shell are beefed up around the bearings  these are a compromise between the standard shell and the quaife one. If you take a look on our web site there may be a picture of it on there. At a guess the post and packing would be about £40 to £45
Thanks Lawrence

Hello Graeme,
Re the bearings spinning, quite common for the sleeve gear bearing to spin, layshaft normally OK, not quite sure why loctite is classed as a failure, properly degreased with the right grade correctly applied it should work. Assuming everything is in good order its difficult to see what would fail or how the bearings would cause a failure, the heavy shell is simply a much beefed up casing, but not between the two bearings where you would want to beef it up, so in reality not really recommended, it would make no difference in the area you are having problems with. In truth on a road bike the shell is not really the issue its always something else that fails that causes the shell to crack, a broken tooth jammed between two gears, or bearing failure particularly on the layshaft damaging the main shell. If I found no cracks or other damage on the shell then I would use loctite and use it. If you wanted to change it I would go for the standard shell.Hope this helps, good to see the old post office is still working away. Best regards, Roger

I ended up buying an Andover one.

The Andover Norton gearbox shell is stronger than the original one. Nothing can be done about the bearing seats being too close together because that is how the gearbox was designed. All we could and did do was to strengthen the gearbox by increasing the shell's wall thickness.

Mick Hemmings uses them to build complete Quaiffe racing gearboxes. Our "family racer" has one of them (the Hemmings Quaiffe gearbox, not just the Andover Norton gearbox shell).

Joe/Andover Norton

So is it worth "glueing" the bearings in? Is it worth "pining" them in
as some have done with gearbox and engine mainbearings? Would this
help prevent cracking?
