Replacing stem oil seal (2012)

Old thread but I found it useful in my prep for an intake seal R&R. I used a homemade compressor like described in another thread that used a flat plate (i.e an old spindle cover plate ) but instead used some 3/8" square steel stock.

Replacing stem oil seal (2012)

Made a center hole to pass the rocker adjuster through and made two tapped holes for 1/4" all thread.
This did the trick to compress the springs, but because the rods are turning against the valve seat, they tended to wonder off the edges if I wasn't carefully about keeping even pressure on each. I will be building Ludwig's tool soon as he has kindly offered to send me the hard to source M7 threaded adjuster piece. Then I can compare the two tools and carry on.
I only did the smoking right intake seal for now...new Kibblewhite (or should it be Kibbleorange?) viton seal seems to have solved the smoking on throttle blips after a good long ride today. Will see how it holds up in next few rides.

Sure, but shipping that into Canada is going to be $10-15...that's why after an exhaustive search locally for it, decided to try the alternate setup as depicted above. Ludwig took pity on me and is sending me one of his threads gratitus...Nice Guy!

Yes, I see your point. I usually keep a running parts list of things I want from McMaster and then just place an order when I need something important.Their warehouse must be close to me because I have had stuff delivered in 24 hours.
I also agree about Ludwig, I had the opportunity to exchange some E-mails with him recently and the conversation was very pleasant and informative.

Yes, ordering little items piecemeal across the border is just a bit silly. I had located suitable threaded rod with nuts from an EBay outlet...was going to be $20 USD shipped and was about to order when Ludwig stepped in to be my hero ;-)

Anyhow, my solution with the bar stock and 1/4" rods did work, but not ideal and will repeat operation on left side seal once I get the Ludwig tool setup. BTW I used the rope method to hold valve up and that worked very well. Not sure I'll fashion Ludwig's tool for that function...even though I have the needed bits to make it.

Hi All,

Has anyone out there tell me how to access or find a copy of the PDF of 'Ludwig's method' which the NOC apparently published? I can't get the link on this website to bring it up.

Many thanks,
Richard

Thanks. When I took the rocker cover off the first thing I saw was a curley bit of oil seal spring. Previous owner clearly fitted the rover type. Hmmm.....

How does one narrow down oil burn to dried out intake oil seals?

When you have oil burning at high intake vacuum conditions. Most noticeable on decel, coasting with throttle closed.

My bike started giving blue puffs when blipping throttle from idle, just out one side. Plug oily black on that side.

Well, I'm sure all of you have been on the edge of your seats waiting to hear if replacing my valve stem oil seal worked

It worked out great, big thanks to ludwig again for posting such a useful & easy to follow step by step guide.

Had a little bit of hassle getting the collets back in, which was expected, just a bit fiddly.

Bike is bolted back together and ran on the bench for 10mins and everything seems OK so far.

Just as I decided to go for a shakedown spin the heavens opened, it is Ireland

Hopefully this has sorted the smoking issue from the RH exhaust, no sign of smoke on the bench but I won't count my chickens until I take it for a spin & get everything nice & hot.

Kevin
Gidday mate, where do i find ludwigs guide for this? Cheers

Thanks for directing me to the document - looking forward to trying Ludwig's method ('74 Interstate suddenly very smoky on the left side, sooty plug).

You might want to rule out a blocked drain hole in the rocker inlet floor. I had this issue some months after doing the valve seals with method described in this thread. Checked for drainage rate and it seemed sluggish. Was having left side sooty & misfires. I run a long spray can straw down the drain hole (sits have covered by the right side inlet valve seat). Got the straw all way down to the crankcase. Gave it a few good blasts of WD40. Rechecked drain rate in the inlet floor and it was better. Solved misfires and sooty left bank.
