How do you install the seal on the intake valve guide to keep it from moving with the valve on a 1973 850? Is it a press fit over the top of the guide? I'm ready to remove the springs again since it wasn't done previously. Any input appreciated.

Hi:
There was a video from Mick Hemmings on his commando rebuilds which showed a simple tool he used to install the seals.Works real slick.I always had trouble until I made one. It is a piece of 1/2" diameter aluminum or steel stock about 1" long. Drill through to the valve dia . Which I believe is 5/16".
Slide your valve in the guide and put the seal on after oiling. Then slide the tool over the valve stem as a guide and press on the end of the seal with the tool. After a few times it will pop right over.Be sure it is seated. The valve only needs to go in about an 1 1/4".

I fit the inlet valve stem in the guide by hand and with a drop of oil slide the seal down onto the head of the guide, remove the valve stem and press down firmly with my thumb. Then fit a small socket that just captures the outside diameter of the seal to a 1/4 drive extension bar and gently press down. Note the top of the seal must cover the head of the guide so be gentle.

Thanks to all. I guess I made too big a deal of it. I did pull the springs and seat the seals firmly on the guides with no problems.
