The holes for my center stand are wallowed out in my cradle in the fore and aft direction. I know a good welder but he's fifty miles away and it would be difficult to make it over there in the near future.

I was thinking about trying to fill and reshape the holes with JB Weld but I'm worried I might have trouble getting it out in the future when I get the cradle welded up. Any ideas?

Fix it properly, you can reweld the holes and redrill them or you could drill the holes bigger and sleeve it, very rare they flog out like that are you starting your bike while on the centre stand as that might be the reason they flogged out in the first place, JB weld is good stuff but for flogged out holes for bolts not so good if there is movement.

in that application you wont have to worry about removing it, it will crack and chip its way out on its own

You do know if you did maintenance and kept the hardware tight this would never happen.
Do you have early or late style SA mounts? If your bike is early then just upgrade and replace with late style stepped bushes and drill out the cradle to accomodate the stepped bushes.
The good stepped bushes are hard as tool steel. If you have a late cradle, you could have custom made hardened bushes to fit the oversize holes.
I doubt I would bother to weld a cradle for sloppy holes except on a out of frame restoration.
IMO custom bush is the way to go...

I don't think the JB would last long, but that said, if you want to try it, heat will get rid of the JB. But I'd spend the time to either weld it or put a bushing in it. You can find all sizes of bronze oilite bushings on ebay reasonably. That would be my option.

I would have thought that JB weld will not last, not difficult to drill and sleeve it.
Its one less bodge to worry about later.

For anybody interested.............

  • JB Weld - 3,960 psi Tensile Strength
JB KwikWeld - 2,424 psi Tensile Strength

Not a lot there but often enough to get you through a situation.

  • Mild Steel - 78,000 psi Ultimate Tensile Strength
