The ignition switch on my 73 850 Interstate was attached to the air cleaner backing plate for the dual amal setup. I've since switched to a single Mikuni. The weld that held the switch to the backing plate failed leaving the switch dangling. This allowed me to remove the original air cleaner backing plate giving me better access to the Mikuni & air cleaner. A good thing! I'd like some ideas on how to secure the switch without it looking wonky and still easily accessible. Has anyone on the forum come up with acceptable solutions?
Thanks!

One of the previous owners of my `73 Roadster moved the ignition switch so it faces out to the side instead of forwards.
This was done because the original Ham Can backing plate was removed, presumably to fit a single Mikuni. I have no complaints with this arrangement because it gives much better access to the dual flat slide carbs and pod filters I fitted. Bike is stored in my barn for the winter but I can get some better pics if you're interested. I seem to recall the P.O. cut the ignition switch mount off of the backing plate and simply bolted it to the front of the battery tray.

How far do you want to move it?

I did the same think as Mark. If you run the bracket behind the front of the battery tray, the tray helps support it so it doesnt fall over time.

Thanks for the suggestions! While I like the switch on the handle bar (looks factory) I rather like reaching under the tank so I'll check out mounting it to the battery tray as shown in the pics! Looks fairly straight forward even for me to accomplish!

The battery tray location is the easiest. Handlebars will require... extra wiring!

That looks very tidy! I wish I had the "skills" to do the same! That said I did attach the switch to the battery tray and was pretty happy with the results UNTIL I attempted to place the side cover back on. OOPS! The cover covered most of the switch making it impossible to insert the key! So, I fabricated a spacer about an inch thick which moved the switch forward of the battery side cover and now allows me to insert the key!
Again I do appreciate all the help! Now if it would stop snowing and warm a bit I could go for a "ride"!
Rick
