2 things on refitting. the first mystery for me is behind the stator and triplex chain is a small bolt into the crank case, I can't see or find anything that this bolt does. its a 1978 t140v. can I just do it up and leave it.

secondly, I have put everything on "loose" making sure I knew how and where it all went. trying to follow anything in the manuals which is not very helpful. when the rotor is back to the chain wheel then a spacer, then putting the stator back to the stops on the studs, only half of the rotor is in the stator, witness dirty marks look like this is how it was before strip down but I didn't look. if I pull the rotor thru so flush at the front I would need a much bigger spacer and the securing nut would hold but a fair bit of thread still shows in the nut.. I hope this makes sense, any advice please. it may be correct but I don't know. thanks Neil
 
Is the mystery bolt you refer to at around 1.00 o’clock as you look at the case?

Sounds like the bolt for the chain oiler tube, which is quite unnecessary IMHO so just loctite a bolt in there, or leave it out altogether assuming it breaths into the chain case anyway ?

As to your rotor, it’s quite normal for it to NOT sit fully into the stator as one might expect. But ‘half way in’ doesn’t sound quite right to me either…?

mine is nothing like that, I will have to investigate a bit.
in your first photo, is that the boss coming straight up from the 3 holes and past the stud.
that is the weird bolt I was talking about

Thanks Eddie, yes that is the bolt, don't suppose it would hurt leaving it out then, I am going to investigate and try and sort the rotor/stator because something doesn't add up. so glad I asked.. cheers again Neil

Yes the pipe, bolt and clip were deleted during 1978 as by the time of the '79 parts book they were not there. If yours still has the bolt then it either had the pipe originally or it's an interim where the pipe had been deleted but still had the bolt hole and bolt.
 
Don't space the rotor out too far or it will rub against the timing pointer. There shouldn't be any spacers behind the stator.

it is April 1978. T140V. I have a spacer there. early Manuel I have shows a seal over the bearing, the T140 parts book doesn't have that, today I have looked again and I have a mate coming tomorrow as it doesn't make sense. I have got the length of the 3 studs now, and it seems they are a standard size. I will check again tomorrow but the triplex gear seems slightly further back than the clutch basket. unfortunately I am still waiting for the chain drive gear to turn up and then I can bolt that side right up which will give better accuracy..

I have looked up rotors and stators and there is mention of 'short' rotor spacer. my stator is 2 wires (single phase) I may have to renew this stator but won't do that until I check out electronic ignition and black box set up which I think needs 3 phase, but will seek advice.

I will report back if I find anything tomorrow.

I did put the case on today and that made me think the rotor was pretty much in the right place. if I pulled it into the stator for a better fit then the nut stopped the case going on. its weird. more playing tomorrow.

The image is a bit small so are you sure you have the apparently correct 13.5mm spacer behind the rotor?

yes totally agree. that is what I thought. should have taken more notice on strip down, lack of experience showing. It was a mess, one of the cam bearings was seized and wearing the casing away, I bought it off of a scrap man. Still trying to get a standard bore barrel as it had very good pistons on it. but no barrel, head or rockers. now stripped and cleaned it is in good shape but these little mysteries don't make sense.
