Well i decided to start a build thread on my dads 73 commando i've started trying to get on the road. He bought the bike in 75 according to the title, not sure if he was the first or second owner? put 22k miles on it by 1991 then bought a new harley and left the norton sitting in the garage until i pulled it out earlier this year after he died. There's not much left to take apart, and pieces are showing up in the mail so i thought it might actually be time to start this thread, and cash allowing hoping i can get it on the road by this fall. A few shots from when it saw the sun for the first time in 21 years...

Really looks like this was taken apart at some point in time, which considering it's numbers matching and has 22k miles on it, and still in one piece, would make sense. Only way to know was to open it though, still going to replace all the bearings and gaskets/seals as well as the kicker pawl which had slight wear on it.

Nice looking Norton, sorry to hear about your Dad, but you're doing him proud, 'cause this has all the trimmings of being a great build thread for "Most Improved" !! Cj

You are doing a great job. There doesn't seem to be any young mechanics around anymore. British bikes require special skills as I'm sure you're finding out.

thanks guys. A lot of it comes down to the almighty dollar. I'm trying to stay under $4000 right now and do all the down and dirty stuff right. I've got the rest of my life to worry about the pretty stuff. I got bored and started working on my brothers 56 ford f100 today too, it needs king pins bad and thats a new learning experience for me too!

Your going to love working on the Norton after kin pins.

Great work! How did you get that header so shiny?

The Best of the Best , the 73 750 .

Throw a 4 s cam in or two s , and W&S valve sping set . Check the endfoat clearance in the oil pump.
( You lap case to give 1 thou . ) and thats about it .

We call that ' PETANIA ' its ALL THE RAge , THESE DAYS . its only original once.

SOME COULD SAY TARTING IT UP COSMETICALLY S DETRIMENTAL TO ITS ORIGINALITY ( i mean respraying not the cleaning . cleanliness is next to godliness . particularly internally . )

Deserves a bit of respect , the olde Time Capsual type perspective . The TARDIS .

Though I would put the blankety swing arm spindle in at a firm interfearance fit , with a LARGE hydraulic press .

At then theres Portuguls revenge on Great Britain . The Gearbox layshaft Bearing .

Parts are coming in, and nuts and bolts are actually starting to tighten rather than loosen!

Gearbox back together and polished up

Also got the frame back from powder coating, along with the mounts and swing arm. Started glass beading and painting a few parts myself like the oil tank

Dont forget your frame grounding points. I also put some on my coil bracket and the frame coil/gas tank mounts. Sorry about your dad, I lost mine when I was 3 to a car accident mom had 4 of us. The first time you feel the pull youll know why your dad bought it.

assembly has officially begun, original ID plate reinstalled and dropped a tool on the frame and gave it it's first blemish. And were off!

Getting ready to install the trans/cradle/swingarm. cleaned and polished the Z brackets, wanted to try them on the bike but hardware all looked like this!

This is going along so great. Looking forward to an upper Bucks blast-off before the wx turns. Nice turnaround on the engine rebuild from Classic Cycles - like what it should be. They are hosting the TIOC Britbike picnic Sept. 22 from 11am-4pm if you need some more motivation!
