On my slickshift gearbox is a working speedo drive, and the rebuilt speedo is also geared to run off it. My rear wheel has the original drive gearbox and it will not be required. Can I simply remove it, or will I need to add a spacer to make up any lost width? I’m not at home right now and can’t look, but the question was running around in my head needing an answer.

The actual width of the material that you’ll be missing is not a lot, so I’d say that in that respect, you can just remove it.

But not really coz you’ll have an untidy collection of spacers etc that just won’t look tight. Best bet is to removes all you can and make up a new alloy spacer.

The speedo drive also functions as a dust cover. Might also keep water out of the bearing. I agree that an unused speedo drive don't look right and will give some drag.
But I checked on the red slimline Commando engined racer. It was fitted with an aluminium spacer. no speedo drive,

If I had stayed longer with you I could have asked you 😂 By the way, I

have had my wheels rebuilt with sealed bearings.

Also, it was rather cold just after I left your house, and we did manage to explore the Vildmarksvagen. As you can see we did have snow and ice
