rear wheel removal

hello getting ready to change rear tire on 75 mk111 i see in the service manual theres two ways of of detaching rear wheel leaving chain and sprocket undisturbed or complete rear wheel removal. Which ways the best to go . M.C.

I find taking the whole thing off easier than dealing with getting the drive lugs back into the cush drive.

Remove main axle, speedo and spacer, wiggle rear wheel out.

But the MkIII rear wheel is easier to remove from its cush drive than the earlier models.

hello again So are you saying leave the chain and sprocket on and remove rear wheel for a mk111 M.C.

If there's no reason to disturb the chain and sprocket then leave them in place, as the MkIII wheel should drop off the sprocket cush drive vanes quite easily, and you'd only be giving yourself another job to do re-tensioning the chain when you put it all back in.

And, thinking about it some more, it's doubtful that you could easily remove both parts of the MkIII rear wheel together-without them separating, (it would certainly be a more awkward way, and require more space for wheel removal) because the spindle/axle must be completely removed (from the R/H side) first. The wheel is then effectively hanging quite loosely on the sprocket cush drive vanes, and a slight wiggle on the tyre will probably cause the wheel to drop off the cush vanes.

If you're dropping the rear wheel out of a Mk111, it's a good idea to put the mainstand feet on a board (1" thick or so) this will make the job of clearing the mudguard much easier, in fact it's almost essential if you have anything wider than a 4.10 fitted. The alternative is canting a bike with no rear wheel over on one stand foot one-handed whilst trying to get the wheel out with the other. It can be done but it's scary.

Out on the road, you'll need a handy kerb to work from.

Hey Followed Mr. LAB's advice on pulling the wheel put center stand on 2by 4 and how do we say in the states "piece of cake" you da man! He's right and manual say's QUICKLY DETACHABLE REAR WHEEL ! Thats for 75 mk111 i don't know about the other years or models . Shock absorbers all in place looks good . Thanks M.C.
