I know the book shows to use heat insulators between the manifold and head when mounting Amel carburetors using the hard phenolic kind and does not show anything other than the O-ring between the carburetor and manifold. But on some bikes like my BSA Single I prefer the soft insulators. Seems to me that they would seal better. What are your opinions about using the softer ones and do some of you put insulators between the carb and manifold junction?? Or only at the manifold to head junction? Thanks.

I do it just like the book calls for. Never had a leak at head or carb.

An extra heat insulator at the carb- manifold junction is mostly superfluous.

I do not like the phenolic spacers because the do not seal up air leakes. I use the 1/8" soft gaskets which do the job as heat insulaters and, with the application of Yamabond seal up perfectly. The pitfall is that if you tighten the bolts on the carb flange too tight, which is easy, then the flange bends giving more problems. I tighten it just enough to hold..maybe 5 - 7 footpounds and let the gasket sealer work as a glue. So I use the soft gasket between the head and the manifold and then a thin paper gasket betwwen the carb and the manifold OMITTING THE O RING. Plus more yamabond. Now the entire intake tract is sealed completely.

Here is a quick test to see if the phenolic spacers are leaking...try a pair of 107 needle jets and see if the bike suddenly runs much better.

I wonder just how hot the carbs do get, or more to the point, the temp of the fuel in the bowls. In colder climes the carbs might want warmer fuel.

Hey GTSUN, I will be at the SoCal Shelby Dodge at the Fullerton Applebees this Thursday night: if you can make it, I'll buy you a beer

Hey John, if I can make it to Applebee's Thursday I will. Be good to see you

Cool Glen, maybe see you tonight.

a long time ago ..20 years or more...I bolted up a pair of Amals sans heat insulators. While in motion there was no problem but when I stopped and the carbs fully heated up I could hear the fuel boiling in the carbs.
