Question on a '74 Dzus Fastner

Working on bringing back a '74 Commando that was a basketcase. I have part of the Dzus fastner that fits through the frame and holds the left side cover in place, but missing some of the pieces to it. Can someone tell me the pieces I am missing? My side cover is complete and has the locking wire intact.

There must be some sort of a grommit and spring that applies pressure to it to hold it in place.
A picture or discription would be much appreciated.

Seems to be a bit skinny and naked, never seen them like that !
Don't think they supply bits for them ?, they come as whole ones..

What does the parts book show, they are held captive somehow too ?

My fastener will not come fully out of its housing like that.
I always assumed they were made like that, so it couldn't get lost....

Is your housing still fitted to your frame, high up under the seat on the left side, just in front of the sidecover.

Mine has always been loose. I figured a little smear of high temp adhesive would hold it when the time comes.

Mmmm, your dzus doesn't come right out.

So does the OP have the fixture in the frame still, we wonder ?

Thanks, Seeing a picture really helps. Unless I can fabricate somthing, I guess I need to try and find the entire part # 062489. I went to the local speed shop and went through their Dzus catalogue, and found nothing close. A question I have after seeing the pictures, is the pin that turns inside the stand off, spring loaded?

It's not spring loaded.

The spring tension to hold it when locked in comes from the spring on the sidecover bracket.

And, talking to Commando owners, left sidecovers are somewhat scarcer to find - from all the owners hunting another one, after it fell off in flight.
That dzus just is not all that secure....

Dzus fastener is held on with a very, very small spring clip. Comes out easy enough, if your vision is good enough. I'm 65 so go figure how I could see it. I bought one from Commando Specialties, about $25. One of the best parts and insurance I've bought considering my left side cover came lose and fell off on I-91 in Vermont. Just truly fortunate no one hit it before I could walk back and grab it.

New one on and the sidecover feels very secure. Worth the money to replace rather that fiddle around with trying to fix it.

It's nearly 6" across so that small band has more surface area than you'd think. It should provide sufficient filtration for the Mikuni I'm starting out with. Eventually I'll get FCR's, so that 'top power' will be available.

Is that the S-shaped one with curly ends, rivetted on.
Or something different ??

An aircraft spares supplier is a good place to look for dzus fasteners. Also some of the fibreglass guys have them. Often instead of a grommet they simply have a tight fitting nylon washer which gets pushed over the stem and down to the waisted part. It stops the stem and loop from becoming free to get lost.. On the other side of the attachment the spring is usually pop-riveted so the spiral on the bit you have engages with it.

Any Norton Dealer could supply the exact one required.
I have heard folks here mention also fitting a nylon tie wrap to ensure nothing escapes unexpectedly.

Guys thanks for your comments. I have joined many forums because of the variety of bikes I have, and I rate this one as one of the very best. This is my first Norton and the information gathered in this forum makes this possible. Again, thank you. After trying to come up with a work around, I have ordered a new complete part. The $30ish price (including shipping) is reasonable, as opposed to losing a side cover at speed.

Having suffered the agony of having my side cover fall off and rattling down the street, I concur that a safety tie to prevent the
Dzus Fastener from turning is prudent as mine seems to be a sloppy fit.
