richmont,
I was browsing on another thread thinking about the PIA location for the dzus fastener location. This may solve your arthritic problem with your Dzus if you want to make some slight modifications. look at post #5 here: https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/maney-920-tti-transplant.27113/
If you want to be able to reverse this, I would just use the existing holes where the dzus/spacer is located and take the spring wire off by removing the rivets that hold it. Note: you can do this with a roadster tank. Not going to happen with an interstate.
Cheers,
Thomas

Thanks for the input guys. I think I may have learned enough here to make at least a minor explosion ! A\Seriously, I thank all for the advice. I will try that if the cold ever quits. I think the biggest issue is the single Mikuni carb and the fastener is between that and the key input.

I have 2 dzus-fastened covers to deal with presently along with left thumb cartilage that's well past it's service life. Waiting until next winter to get the repair since it's 6 weeks recovery.

I've always thought Prof Dzus was so clever, so mine are there to stay.

Yup, I have a few of those in my sailing tackle box...but they are larger than 1/4" diameter. Rather ebay/amazon, try a local marine supply store like West Marine etc.
Should have a good selection to check into. Might need to use some kind of solid space behind the hole ( lump of high density plastic/Delrin or alu) that the Pin passes through. The pins tend to be longer than the Dzsus Pin so need to fiddle the mod some.

I just got here and already going to the fridge because this has me parched & my fingers won't bend to even see if my side cover can be removed. Never have liked that little twisty, but always wondered of it's true name...The ones given by me aren't polite.

I bet they bend enough to get under a ring pull ! ;);)

Dzus fastener blues. For those of us with arthritic fingers these suck ! my poor gel batt !!

No ring..Uno quarto Carta Blanca. I like a good lager when feeling my age. Have to drive too far for a good Belgian ale or decent Limey. Besides around here they keep the stuff too cold and ruin it, or disturb it too much when serving up.

I don't mind my Dzus fasteners. Even with my left hand that's numb in the index and middle fingers from a neck injury in 03. And my 75 year old hands which certainly don't work as good as they used to. I did once not tighten it enough, but I really knew it when I did it and the cover came off about 5 miles later and it took me about a half an hour to find the thing in the ditch. I was wondering what that strange feeling was on my leg. When I looked it was gone. Of course I'd moved my leg out by the time I looked.

I was once riding on a city street when something caught my eye.
It was my side cover passing me on the street.
It didn't do it any good.

I imagine getting to the Dzus fastener that attaches the left hand side panel is somewhat awkward, especially if someone is using Interstate side panels. One idea that I have is to take the head of an Allen screw (that would use size 3/16 or 7/32 allen key) and weld it to the top of the Dzus stud. Then purchase a Ball-End driver shaft and figure out a way to attach some kind of handle to it. You may need to cut the shaft to a desired length.

McMaster-Carr sells the Ball End driver shafts 3/16 inch or 7/32 inch which can work at a maximum 25 degree angle deflection. They're inexpensive, so I'd buy a few of them. Also I would leave the bale wire on the Dzus stud in case you need to remove the panel out in the field.

I would try the above Dzus stud modification for myself however, I happen to have Mark IIA and its side panel attaches with a plastic Dzus fastener in the lower rear corner. It is extremely easy to get to, all you need is a coin to turn the Dzus stud.
