Question on making a 74 .. 850cc into a left foot shift

A few years ago I went buy a BSA engine from a bloke and I noticed all of his classic bikes were converted to left foot gearchange there was a triumph 5ta a BSA b40 and I think his Velo was as well
I asked him why he'd done it and he said his wife also rides his bikes and just can not get on with right hand gearchange
Personally I don't think it'd be too hard to convert any bike from right to left but I've never needed to

Wondering if using a master & slave hydraulic cylinder to actuate up/down shifts from opposite side could work?

push button all electric

searching harley 1975-76 sportster ironhead crossover shaft shifter, parts manual, parts that may work, ideas, etc

I agree with those above saying that doing a Dreer / racer style crossover wouldn't be too much work,

When I said I thought it too much work, I was really thinking about replicating the MK3 set up on a pre MK3 bike.

Do you mean convert to a disc rear wheel? That's easy enough aswel but probably easier to get a longer cable and remake a brake pedal and pivot on the right

If a kit were brought out tomorrow how many would sell ?
I doubt there would be much demand but the question was "can it be done" not whether it should be done

The bit I thought would be challenging was the modification of the gearbox and crossover and then the modification of the existing primary cover OR modification to fit a MK3 primary on pre MK3 cases.

Going around all of this with a linkage is, of course, much easier.

It still needs careful design, machining and fabricating skills though if you’re to avoid a foot of pedal travel and loads of slop etc !

1.Can you swap shifter and brake petals on a 74 850 or just not possible or too expensive?

2, Can you make it electric start ?

thanks
Swapping shifter & brake pedals on a 74 has been done, but you're mostly on your own figuring it out or coming up with suitable linkages, fittings & bracketry. There isn't even a ready to buy bolt on conversion kit. You'd have to make it up or pay & find someone else to do it. Another way is even more complicated & expensive, involving major 75 part changes.

E start can also be done & there are bolt on kits for that, but a big dough option.

75s have both if they are must have. Prob cheaper & way less hassle to just start with a 75 rather than converting a 74. Also, the 75 maintains originality which usually trumps mods.

I'd use a steel tube full of ball bearings connected from the existing gear lever to the new one on the other side
Simple!!! :D :D :D :D

But actually...I think...a cross over gear linkage can be devised.....it is a given amount of work....

And for those with limitless funding, TTi has a solution similar in concept to the MKIII......

But it is only half of the task....moving a mechanical brake linkage across the bike is in itself a considerable amount of work....moving a master cylinder isn't trivial.

Major diff in footpeg location between the 2 tho. With the other more rearset position setup, you can dump 2 rose joints being right at a major pivot point.

1st i've seen that nifty primary side cover also. Never hearda JNG (on the 2 side covers) either, maybe they sell the bits.

fishing around further.. JNG

aah, i remember some of this now & 'yellow peril'

Bummer, more pix gone in that thread, someone prob knows (vid shows it at Norton International Rally 2017) who's C'do that belongs to & if they sell bits.

aah, the JNG primary cover with a rearset crossover shift linkeage setup here

Maan, check out the gal @ ~ 01:33 on the yellow C'do, with a superb 1 shot kickstart technique
