Question about Gearbox Bolt

Hi everyone!
At the front facing section of the gearbox are two bolts.
What are they for?
I changed the gearbox oil the other day, and the upper bolt is leaking a little oil down the side.
I filled it to the level bolt hole on the back as I normally do, so did not overfill.
Can this bolt be simply removed without upsetting anything inside, and a new washer with some sealant put on to stop the leaking?

the two bolts are for the shift quadrant and lever. there are o rings under the washers to seal the shafts and will need replacing.

thank Bill, is it ok to unscrew them one at a time all the way out to put on a new o ring or washer with sealant, this would not
cause anything inside to become undone?

You'll feel things click and clack when you put a wrench to the bolts, but I had no problem replacing the o-rings without any other disassembly. Sealant is a bad idea, since the parts inside need to rotate.

If you've got long flexible fingers and no breather in the way, you can replace the 'O' rings but there's a good chance that the bushes are also getting a little worn so new rings may not be enough to solve it.

Actually, shift 'quadrant' and 'camplate'.

I've used a little silicone sealant around o-rings without bad effect - the "poor man's quad-ring." Usually let it cure before inserting something like a rotating shaft. Don't think you'll have any issues. At worst, the rotation will wear away any silicone that leaks onto the shaft.

I could be wrong....
