Promoting Products

This could prove a tricky subject.
For example, the CNW café racer recently shown by Matt. Is this simply showing us all another beautiful, well thought out special, or promoting CNW. Also when I asked what forks & yokes were used was Matt supposed to tell us or tell me/us to look in the for sale section for a reply?

I think this is a matter of, for the lack of better words, moderation. We have not seen or read the complaints, but with a little understanding, it's not hard to see their point.

The moderators make the good point to say that there is a for sale section for people to exploit and stick there wares out there to the "nth" without worry of crossing any line. And it is there for us to go and shop to our hearts content.

Just because "Norton Commando Classic Motorcycles" is first in the list, does not make it the default for any and all whims for attention.

What is easy to see is the overreaction and hyper-sensitivity related to anything that might signify a change in habits. In this regard perhaps the moderators are right on the money. Maybe be a little discrete and use a little "moderation" and/or the for sale section.

Now, if we could just get those MKIII moved over there with the 961's. :D

Jerry has simply asked for people to post adverts for their parts and services in the section for parts and services, L.A.B. has clearly stated that they are not taking a Draconian approach to people who are not abusing the system.

The way I read this is that if someones posts a query about front fork kits for example, then John Robert Bould and others are at liberty to mention that he has developed and sells an appropriate product, others may recommend other solutions or vendors as they see fit. If on the other hand John opts to hold a special Christmas sale of his product then he is asked to post this information in the For Sale section - why is this seemingly simple and polite request so difficult to comply with or understand?

I use John as an example not because I am accusing him of anything, but simply because he was one of the last to post and who actually sells a product that has been well reviewed on here. He has obviously also stated his reluctance to mention his products ever again, this is in my opinion a misreading of both the sentiment and intention of the moderators with this post.

I suggest that if a person is selling a single item e.g. their road bike or the bits off it, the 'For Sale' section is the place to do it. However discussion about new go-faster or more-reliability goodies should be promoted right across the forum. Personally I don't care who is selling what, I love seeing what MADASS has to offer and read the discussion. That 'crankshaft porn' topic from Jim Comstock was excellent. And Jim Schmidts stuff is gold. I am only on this forum for the technical interest it provides - long may it live.

I think you guys are over thinking this.

The reason we have moderators is to moderate!! Let them do their unpaid & thankless task.

Less rules and more common sense being applied is my recommendation.

One easy way to destroy a forum is when the moderator starts bouncing people around. I know what he is saying and I don't think it should be taken in a negative sense, however there is always the danger that people might become defensive and feel inhibited.

Points made, opinion given.
Maybe it's time to lock up this thread and let it fade away.

Hobot, To describe this as "stupid and ignorant" is absolutely disrespectful to a couple of guys who are providing a service just because of their passion in respect of our common interest. There is a big difference between mentioning one's professional activities and experience when it is relevant to the topic at hand and another thing all together to constantly post about your business or products at every opportunity. I haven't myself registered any complaints about this, but have from time to time observed some members going over the top. I feel that most people on here are sensitive enough to tell the difference between shameless self- promotion and helpful assistance. Furthermore the fellow enthusiasts on here who ply their trade with skill and integrity in Norton products or services are well known and don't need to continually mention this, there are plenty of us on here who will recommend their services where appropriate, based on our own personal experience.

The moderators tread a fine line in Maintaining this forum as one of the best that provides a damned good service for a wide cross section of individuals and attitudes with minimal (mostof the time) bullshit. When they receive a critical mass of complaints they have to act. We owe them a debt of gratitude not gratuitous insults and nonsense about potential legal liability.

Ok, lets put it to the test. Please provide concrete evidence of these transgressions. I must be "blind" 'cause I haven't seen anything like what you are describing yet. Mind you, I look for what may interest me though. Handy tips, handling fixes, consumables etc.
Here's are leading question. Why are the original type air filter so expensive? Where can I buy them at the right price?

I think you mean the 'administrator'? However I don't believe anyone is being "bounced around" (whatever that means?) but it is Jerry's site, so He makes the rules.
I do think that certain people are overreacting, as for the most part, things should basically continue as normal.

I gotta say, I did like Hobot's rant. It was the very first time I was able to understand everything he was trying to say.
Keep it up Steve!!!

BTW, I thought that Fullauto's post was a bit of a strong sales pitch, http://www.accessnorton.com/phil-performance-commando-t19549.html ,so I ignored it.
But I didn't go running to daddy to make it stop.
I would have PM'ed the "offender" with my concerns if I was that bothered by it.

Direct promotion of a product for the expressed purpose of making a sale should be in the For Sale section but someone posting a product that members have wanted to know about or where to find it or need help with it or want a review of it should be allowed in the forum for general discussion.

Just my thoughts.

Hello. The post was general advice given to Phil about his build. I even stated that a Fullauto Technologies head is not the place to start. It's for further down the road when other issues are dealt with. Besides Phil had already bought a head. I don't understand how that post constitutes a "strong sales pitch".

Ok all-- I think we get the general idea- Lets get back to Commando business!!
Locking topic- If you are in doubt just put it in the For Sale section. This should not have been such a big deal.

For the record, I never had a problem. If anyone complains to us again, it will be dealt with it behind the scenes.

Thanks for all the comments.
