Hello all,

Les and I have received a few complaints about users promoting their products in the Forum. If you are promoting products/ services please could you do that in the "For sale" Forum. That is the place to do it.

Cheers-- Jerry

This is about the most stupid ignorant post i could possibility imagine here as a lot of us don't know what all is available w/o some altering and there would be no living riding Commando forum w/o vendors and inventors of all sorts. Comnoz, CNW, Fullauto and Lansdowne posts would be taboo too of course and should all be moved off main topic heading. No feed back on happy or sad dealing with likes of Old Brits and others. Money and parts and service exchanges makes the world go around - unless a Police State Authority shuts it down. I say let the free market fly and buyer beware with feed back here and those offended by private or public offerings *filter themselves out* of what upsets them to see. I'm pretty good legal beagle so could see this policy going to court with the winner shutting down the forum. There are very valid law and legal reasons I can live w/o driver license, no SSN - No IRS banking and as a non-State resident with 16 yr primary care physician license that used to come in ALL CAPS NAMES until they tired to withhold it from me > now they all come like our mommy's showed us how to write proper people names in Upper and Lower case, if case ya think I'm missleading where this stupid policy may lead. It would be educational to know what "discriminated" products in "International commerce" were so upsetting to risk forum over?

I don't think the measures are intended to be quite that draconian.
I'm sure it will still be possible to grant a certain amount of leeway to cover the things you've mentioned, however as Jerry said, there has been a few complaints about 'vendor' members promoting products and services.

Members are of course free to comment on whether they agree or disagree.

I appreciate your quandary but reality is if the product offered or the people offering something are not worth while then simple volunteer voting by not responding or by contesting claims in public forum would settle the case by dying on the vine or becoming the next must have device like the reed valve breathers or top link headsteadies. I would suggest to provide solution to those offended some way by non part numbered items offered up, be given their own section-private invitation only area w/o any Non-Commando Parts Book numbered items or discussions being allowed > like the New 961 area to hang out in, while the rest of us dice it up in public pub forums. Could be a paid only subscription service to truly secure their peace online with like minded people. Only thing that makes sense to my injured brain is the upset folks are really complaining about free enterprise system they are fearful to compete in equally. I avoid some tickets with sign on my car that says Not For Hire, Not For Sale, Private Use Only, which might be a good informative heading for a new section to avoid by most of us. We had this when I grew up and was called Equal Civil Rights, equal as a gold dollar coin showing up in bank account or IRS payment equal to one paper FRN-usd, but not the same real worth as the coin offered up in public. Best wishes resolving peaceful relations with economic incentives.

Hobot, To describe this as "stupid and ignorant" is absolutely disrespectful to a couple of guys who are providing a service just because of their passion in respect of our common interest. There is a big difference between mentioning one's professional activities and experience when it is relevant to the topic at hand and another thing all together to constantly post about your business or products at every opportunity. I haven't myself registered any complaints about this, but have from time to time observed some members going over the top. I feel that most people on here are sensitive enough to tell the difference between shameless self- promotion and helpful assistance. Furthermore the fellow enthusiasts on here who ply their trade with skill and integrity in Norton products or services are well known and don't need to continually mention this, there are plenty of us on here who will recommend their services where appropriate, based on our own personal experience.

The moderators tread a fine line in Maintaining this forum as one of the best that provides a damned good service for a wide cross section of individuals and attitudes with minimal (mostof the time) bullshit. When they receive a critical mass of complaints they have to act. We owe them a debt of gratitude not gratuitous insults and nonsense about potential legal liability.

Hobot,

from your response it appears that you are not aware that Jerry Doe owns this website

as such, he makes the rules, and we abide by them, period, end of discussion

you have now expressed your opinion that Jerry's rule is "stupid', he has his reasons

you are as capable as anyone else to click on the For Sale section, it is not any inconvenience

For the Public Record:
1. I called the thread subject stupid not Jerry.
2. Jerry did not state that he had finalized a rule yet but seeking feedback first.
3. I did not contest Jerry's rule making authority only that I think it would be a stupid rule and not that Jerry was stupid if he did so but would be merely complying to strong pressures to do so and keep some peace with those members he's trying to please.
4. Iup/3dn is either ignorant of English grammar and logic or just being meanly misleading on hobot points or is upset along commercial lines of unable to compete equally so wants special rules as proposed.
5. I only left points why I think its a poor rule and have not called any one names to upset on purpose here, so please cool ya jets and let pure logic or political might win out.
6. Jerry please tell us any new rules so not to break the peace?

Everyone calm down and go get a cup of tea or glass of wine-- its not a big deal
Just trying to keep all happy in this happy norton world we live lol

Well said Jerry, and I've just finished my cuppa so am calm, well, as calm as I ever get!

Even in my tea induced state calmness however, I must say that I do tend to agree with the sentiment put forward by young Steven (aka Hobot) on this rare occasion (well that is assuming I have interpreted his prose correctly)!

A great many of the most interesting threads on your fine forum are about the 'stuff'. Just look at the crankshaft porn thread for example, started by Lord Comstock. Ghastly title of course, but fabulous content that really does 'add to the body of knowledge' as they say.

Forums like this do in fact mostly discuss such 'stuff'. And indeed, IMHO, topics about the 'stuff' by some of the supremely qualified members on this forum are the most pressing reasons to have joined this forum in the first place!

So I would personally suggest that some sensible guidelines and moderation would be the most appropriate course of action here. Of course we don't want traders posting '25% off oil filters' unless they post in the for sale section. Neither do we want traders posing as happy clients, etc.

But discussion about new stuff, modifications, tuning, general enhancements etc do, I suggest, most definitely still belong in the main Commando section.

If we ban all talk from traders of new stuff, and if we clamp down on those inpertinant enough to ask questions without having first exhausted the search function, all we will be left with is the face book style social chit chat... which is a bigger issue IMHO, although that does seem to be improving of late.

All IMHO of course.

More tea ??

Hobot = lucid? My god, what's the world coming to. It's like you've dropped trou for all to see. :P

Just kidding. I can see you're quite peeved.

I'm not one of those that complained but I agree that posts pushing an individual's or company's products should be in the For Sale section. I find it obnoxious when a seller never misses an opportunity to push his wares. Like a broken record.

I certainly wouldn't complain, or like to see anyone complaining about this.

In my view, folks pushing products for rare birds like Nortons should be encouraged.
Its hard enough to find such things or find out about such things, and then getting discussion about these is a rare service indeed.

There are plenty of ignorant uninformed forums out there.
Lets not let that happen here too.....

I agree with Rohan on this as there are alot of products and services available that are shown here that I would never have known about without this
forum. When I obtained my bike in 1995,I was in the dark about where and who to get in touch with.I do not see anything offensive about anybody
showing off their items. We are fortunate to have this forum.Just my two cents
Mike

Perhaps there could be a sub forum in the For sale section for people who actually want to help or improve the Commando vender wise.

Not to press the matter but I find it hard to believe the major complaints you are receiving are about self promoting venders in the main forum.

Well said. The small amount of vendor promotion I notice hardly compares to some of the rambling that goes on just so one can hear themselves type.

this is too funny. most every one on here liked to see post's from a certain keyboard commando about his build's and his self aggrandizing. a while back I and others had post's along with a whole thread removed because of outing this hack for what he is and some of you complained about these post's . the good news on this butcher is he is out of business. now some of you are complaining about the self pormotion. damn if you do, damn if you don't!!! i feel sorry for jerry and les on this one.

This reminds me of my small town's annual town meeting. One person brings up some topic of slight concern and jeeze louise and all hell breaks loose in the fire station. Eventually we get back to actually talking about the town (Norton Commandos).

It seems there has clearly been something specific going on that a lot of us know nothing about!

Are we perhaps in danger of "Throwing the baby out with the bathwater" ... "Tarring everyone with the same brush" ... etc ??

I have asked WHY? OK its not a market place...but who really cares? Is it so upsetting that some members offer parts or services..Fullauto as invested a lot to make a buck, and keep bikes on the road..thats not a crime....or is it? ...i will never Mention Lansdowne Dampers again  promise :!:
