Hello all, I have a bit I an issue with my side stand that I want to get resolved. A few months ago the bolt holding it together against the frame broke and part of the bolt is still in the frame itself. I'm not sure if its welded in there or not (or if thats possible) but I was wondering if there was anything that y'all had experienced like this and what you did. Any advice would help. Thanks

That "bolt" is actually a pin. And yes, it is welded. The clip holding the arm to the pin comes off and allows the arm to fall, often with disastrous results. Unless you are building a trailer queen, adding the tab like the Old Britts mod, and using a '72-'75 arm is the only way.

I'm not clear on the 71 prop stand, but my 69 also has a pin that was held on with 2 C-clips. I put a 7/16 grade 8 bolt in there with a nylock on it. It's still not a quality mounting to the frame, but it works for me without the upgrade. For concourse reproductions, you can drill and put a set screw into the pin, covering the hole with bondo and paint so it looks original. At least that would make it relatively safe from falling out, but probably not from failure. You might also want a hardened pin.

That said, I have always started my bike on it's prop stand and I haven't had any problems with it. Maybe its because it's usually an easy starter or I balance it right when I do it, the stand is on the other side from the starter.

I recently did the "Old Britts" upgrade on my 70 model, although I was unaware of Old Britts at the time and obtained the kit from Norvil.
The good thing about Old Britts is that they supply full engineering details (from Andover) to help with proper positioning of the welded bracket, including a template.
If your bike already has the cross tube towards the front of the bottom rails, you won't have to make one and weld it in like I did. That was a bugger of a job without a pipe bender.
I don't know if the cross tube can be purchased.
Cheers
Martin
