well.i just got back from car parts place to get oil to change in the 68 A65.....saw Vulvalean 20/50 'motorcycle' oil for $8.50 a quart ..it boasted 'superior wet clutch protection' saw 20/50 Castro GTX on next shelf on sale for $4 a quart. I pondered..could putting the words "motorcycle oil" on a bottle cause it to cost twice as much?...could that be a marketing ploy? I don't need 'superior wet clutch protection' since bsa has atf in primary.....I bought the GTX we always used in the 'old days' what ya'll think.ps I just posted this on britbike site I am also a member of...could apply to my 72 commando as well...

Oil thread alert.
price of oil

not so much about oil tests but marketing depts. at oil companies jacking price up with bold specialty claims

Alan: This is not the same Castrol we used 25-40 years ago. It sounds as though you have the car oil. Call Castrol and discuss with them-the number is on the bottle

Alan ... up here Motul full syn. costs $20 plus per litre ... around $100 with filter per change per bike !....

I just read the full syn. oil is best , so that what I use in all 3 bikes , usually do change in fall at end of season , unless I have piled on a bunch klicks on one of them ... oil threads have been beat to death on bike forums ... check em out , answers to all your questions plus answers to questions you have never thought of ... once a year change seems to work for me so cost no that excessive , still dents the wallet though...

I needed a few new liters of Valvoline VR1 after my 850 Commando dumped most of its fluid into the primary and then out hte drive sprocket opening.
At the checkouty of my local source for VR1 (Walmart)...was shocked to see the usual $7 CDN per liter price have fallen to $2 per! Scoured the shelves to see how many bottles I could find, but alas only 3 were to be found. Perhaps last of a discontinued product?

We have a Wally store here now putting the crunch on small local merchants , never been to the Wally store , been able to find everything I need from foIks I know

commando 750 ok what the difference/
Alan, I called Castrol and asked them what oil should I use and they recommended the Power 1 4T V Twin Full synthetic. Castrol said like all the older oils the zinc levels are reduced because of catalytic converters.

It is more important to change often than to fret about which oil. When My commando was relatively new and was ridden everyday (mid 70's) It would use no oil until 1,000 miles. Then it would start to use oil. seemed simple enough to me. Changed oil at 1,000 miles.

I agree. But you will find those local businesses going under in the next few years...very sad. We see this where ever the big boys locate. Support them all you can while you can.

There bike shops spread around here that predate me , with young blood learning ropes ... why accept the inevitable if you don’t have to .... different way of life here always has been always will .... less than a million folks with shrinking numbers , big stores will fail before locals ... big boys based on growth , no such thing here ... we call it survival .... most still shoot a deer or two and freeze fish all summer along with a garden to survive ... most think if you can’t fix it then you shouldn’t own it .... very resilient , our young work the oil rigs all over the world but come home always ... very strong pull even for the westernized, big truck driving rich oil workers ..... my Wife has never had a McDonald's burger ever ...

No fast food, no Walmart, for me. I avoid buying Chinese made goods whenever possible. You are just eating your young, so to speak, when you buy from Walmart.

Deeply sympathetic with your take on this. But it didnt work for Canute and it wont work for you. :-(

I know I can’t control the world, but I damn sure can control what I buy and from whom.

If every British bike had a drip-tray under it, we would all be rich enough to build our own sand-castles.
