Powder Coated tank and side covers

Pretty good job and as durable as it is going to ever get. There is a slight orange peal effect. Im trying to decide if I should wet sand before decals and epoxy clear coat.
If you carefully block sand the powdercoat back with 1500 -2000 grit wet (to flattern the orange peal)
Apply your decals and use a 2 pack automotive UV stable clear coat system would be my recomendation instead of a epoxy system.

I have seen orange peel with powder that has been reclaimed. If you paid a commercial powder coater for the job, I would reject it.

Otherwise, I would go with KiwiShane's recommendation.

You should be able to block sand to 2000# or even up to 3000#, then cut and buff to a high shine with no clear.

Some colors orange peel worse than others. Reds are bad for it.

If you want the decals under clear, to get rid of orange peel, I'm with @KiwiShane with slowly block sanding with 1500#. However, a wet clear coat won't adhere to anything sanded above 600#. I usually use the maroon Scotchbrite pads (#7447) after most of the orange peel is gone from block sanding (be careful and don't blow through!). That gives enough of a tooth for the paint to adhere. Without it, the clear will lift in sheets. I do this all the time on bicycle frames.

Alot of paint products can be applied wet on wet where no sanding is required...however applying a 2 pack clear onto a polyester powder finish should provide good "chemical" adhesion with the added help of fine mechanical key preparation (sanding)
For instance if you wipe powdercoat with a thinner rag you will find the powdercoating goes quite sticky ...

Hey Dan,
Did you have that done by someone in your area?

But if you put a different product over the top of the powder coat, then don't you lose the toughness of the powder coat?
A 2 pack clearcoat will protect the transfers on the tank etc from petrol damage.
Most powders I've seen become compromised alot easier from solvents like petrol etc than a 2 pack paint finish

Epoxy? The 2k I used is urethane, not epoxy. Worked great.
Yes agree epoxy is something I would not reccomend using (mentioned in my first comment)
Epoxies generally are very durable but are not usually that UV stable.and can go yellow over time.

Your paint results look great. You are doing good research to find the best way to finish it out.
Looking forward to seeing the finished parts with decal transfer and installed on your bike. 👍

I'll check mine again. Eastwood calls it 2pack. And I think it is epoxy in a spray can. I have it on my tank now and it held up for 10 years but the paint underneath is duplicolor red and after about 6 or 7 years it wrinkled under the clear!
