Pinion gear removal

Just pulling down a 750 motor and having trouble removing the pinion gear, its fighting me all the way, I can nomaly remove the pinion gear without the removal tool but this one is not bugging at all so yesturday I forked out and brought a pinion gear removeal tool, I can get 2 of the jaws to grip the gear but the 3rd jaw I can't get behind the gear and when I wind the puller it just slips over the gear, I slip the jaws on to the flat side of the backing spacer, I done this a few times now and the same results with the 3rd jaw not gripping the gear, there is not much room behine the gear.

Any advise on this would be good, I had to walk away from it as I was getting angy with it.

Heat, penetrating oil and possible some blunt force trauma with a brass hammer?

Everyone I have pulled off has come off easily using 2 small pry bars.
 
Thats the way I nomaly remove them but for some reason this one doesn't want to move, have been spraying it with CRC for a few days, if I can get the 3rd jaw to grip behind the gear it will come, I need a third hand to help will get my mate up today and give it another go,if that don't work then a bit of heat from the oxy torch :roll:

You might need to put a little more bevel on the back of the tool.
It will fit but there is a bit of jiggling to get it to fit around the three sided plate under the gear,its go no go.
 
I throught about the bevel being a bit thick as that seems to be the problem as it hits the outer edge before the jaw can get to where it surpose to be, its only one jaw that is just missing it. mite give the bevel a bit of a file down.

Indeed, I had to do a little fettling to get the puller to fit, and grip. I also had to tighten the puller somewhat tighter than felt right (using pipe grips) to make it work. I suspect the tools we buy today may not be as they were in the day...!
 
Thanks for the replies, the money you pay for these tools you think they would fit without problems, when I pulled the timing gears off the keyway on the shaft was so tight it took me 1/2 hr to knock it out, my mate who was there at the time couldn't beleive how tight it was.
 
Yes you should sit back and breath ,then file down the grabber tips to get all 3 well fitted behind the pinion gear. I'm on my second tool.
 
RGM sells repacement jaws for this tool so no need to replace the whole tool.

I've resorted to using a large lead hammer, to pound the crank nose through that gear.
No damage to the crank.
An old timer told me this trick, apparently that gear can near weld themselves there, especially on older dommies that have a few more years under their belt.
On another make of bike resorted to an angle grinder, that gear HAD welded itself there...
 
There is a guy who sells jaws on ebay that have a little different design and supposed to grab better. There is also a different style that has a turned in lip with the teeth cut into it. You slip it over and turn it so the teeth don't line up and pass through anymore. The gear is the same but I'm not sure if they work with commandos though for clearance issues. I used to use some caulking packing tools that had wicked hooks on them, way more than any chisel.
 
Hey Ashley. i bought a new removal tool for doing my motors, all it took was a little grinding on the outer edge of the tool so it didn'y bind anywhere, nothing off the front or gripping edge ,can post a pic if you need one

Hi Mike

I have checked it out and know where it needs to be done just a bit more taken off the bevel and it well be sweet, it was new years eve when I did it yesturday so after a few beers I had to leve it alone and walk away, will grinde it down today and try again.
