I have fitted a Pazon sure-fire to my US import Mk3 which is working fine, however thus far I cannot get any response from the starter motor.

The starter switch at the handlebar is good and clean, I have power to the White/red wire at the solenoid when the starter button is pressed.

The starter motor works when connected directly to a battery. The earth for the solenoid casing is also good.

The White/purple wire is disconnected from the ballast resistor which is now redundant and disconnected from the solenoid as it goes nowhere.

That leaves me with a spare male spade connector on the solenoid and seemingly no circuit......my electrical knowledge is severely limited and the starter solenoid is not mentioned in the Pazon instructions.

Logic and instinct suggest it should be connected to ground, but I'd rather not find out the hard way if that's wrong.

Please excuse my ignorance but what if anything should be connected to the 2nd spade terminal on the starter solenoid?

Assuming you are talking about the connector that had the white/purple wire, then nothing goes back on there.

I think first review a few simple things.

Does the bike run properly via kick start?

The OEM solenoid ground is through the case. You might try a wire running from a mounting bolt to a known good ground.

Have you checked for voltage at the white/red wire connection? There should be battery voltage between the WR wire and ground when the starter button is pressed.

My solenoid recently died, so my starter motor wouldn't work. Never done it on a Norton, but did it many times on older Fords -- one could use a couple of to make a quick temp electrical path across the big wire posts on the solenoid and see if the starter kicks.

Do not connect it to earth/ground, as that would result in an unfused short circuit when the starter button is pressed (if the solenoid is operating normally).

Nothing.

Are you sure the White/Red [WR] is connected to the correct ("S") solenoid terminal?

Many thanks L.A.B

I removed the Lucas solenoid, re fitted the original Prestolite, ensured the White/Red lead was connected to the S terminal and.....instant life from the starter motor.

It's all about knowing.......I didn't, you did......thanks again.
