Yeah, the outline from my S panels have a very tight or small outline in black over gold, and I've been told it's almost impossible to get the black outline correct. I'd just like B+ to let us know how he gets it 'registered' or correct for the outline to be right if that makes any sense. Otherwise it looks 3D.

Dave,

Patience is the answer...
It's a royal pain in the ***, but the masking film I use is really forgiving, and will take being lifted and re-laid numerous times. The film is also semi-translucent, otherwise it really would be a pain.

The final check is that the outline of the bottom colour leaves a visible ridge on the vinyl so it can be eyeballed quite easily once I 'think' it's in the right place.

Here's an 'S' I did earlier. The factory originals were waterslide, and actually blend in very well with lacquer, but these are stencils - the white line on the edge of the 'o' is just the light picking up on the edge of the graphic - I've since flatted and polished this out.

Andy, that is really nice work. I suspect I wouldn't want to pay somebody shop rates for it. But I think it proves quite well that you can get a fine line with masking. My paint job looks OK, but I wouldn't want to set my tank next to one of yours. I still have some learning to do.

No, It was easy to remove the vinyl. I just let the paint kick but peeled it before it fully cured. I could feel the edge of the letters, so I polished it a bit and then clear coated it again. There are a lot of bikes out there running around with painted logos these days. Some have been done by putting the letters and stripes on over a base coat and then spraying the main color over it. Then the vinyl is removed to reveal the base color. I don't know exactly how Brent Budgor is doing his but I am pretty sure there are no decals involved. http://www.vintage-vendor.com/galleryBeforeAfter.html

CNW proudly says their's are all painted as well. It was from looking at these types of examples and reading a few threads here that convinced me to try it. Like I said. I have only done one!

I left my tank and covers with Brent a couple of weeks ago and here are some pics he sent me that are self explanatory. Will be picking the tins up on the weekend. Looks nice to me :D

After laying down the gold, stickers and striping on then on goes the black, then off come the stickers to expose the gold

End result...looks GREAT

Very nice NORBECER. Only two weeks? And it looks so excellent.

Gee, do you think I was justified complaining about the shop I was dealing with? - they only took two and a half MONTHS to paint my tin-ware, claimed all the pictures I sent him HAD to be vinyl because he'd been painting for 25 years blah, blah blah. I stopped posting to this thread for updates cause I didn't want to sound like a whinny bitch (which I might be). It all came out fine quality in the end (the "Done! or at lease close enough" thread). After the painters ego healed from all the fine examples I showed him here, he miraculously discovered a "NEW" latest technology that had just recently been developed... more Painter Bull.

Your paint looks pretty darn nice, may have been worth all the BS in the end. It seems Brent has done quite a bit of good quality work for the members. In my case my tank had quite a few shallow dents on the top and sides and from what I can see from the pictures they were all very well addressed. I look forward to seeing the finished product this coming weekend.
Cheers, Dennis

Straight off the gun with sticker logo and sticker pinstriping and plenty of clear..... If you want concourse, then you pay for concourse!!!!

Painter Bull?

Where did you get that matching pinstripe tape? I've looked everywhere and can't find any.

Very nice work imo. Congrats! May I ask, what materials were used for the base coat & clear coat? Fuel proof?

As a fulltime motorcycle painter and someone who has painted many Nortons, a number of them featured on this site, including Jerry's JPN on the homepage, I would say your painter is incorrect. Virtually all the ones I have done were done using decals as stencils and spraying on the letters. It requires patience, but the results speak for themselves. I don't know how experienced your painted is, but perhaps he may not have much experience or interest in such a job. You can see many examples this technique if you like at this link -

I'm happy to answer any questions if you have any.

Thank you Brent. The project is over now and although it was a frustrating and too much work for me, it came out nice in the end. I just picked the wrong shop. I'll give you a call for the next one.
