"I have the skill and machines to do this for myself and would only require a slight nudge in the right direction."
yep thats what I started with , so you are on the right track, proceed .
I understand, i think. Thank you

Nice looking axle madass, although I'm not in a position to get one from you at this time, it's nice to see up grades like these being made avialable for our bikes. Cj

off topic a bit, but it reminds me of upgrades to Harleys where at the end of the day there is absolutely no Harley parts to the bike, and a Norton could be built the same way, aftermarket frames, cases, cylinders, heads, trannys, clutches, wheels, forks, bodywork. hmmmmm

There are many already built. I think that with the AHRMA, if it looks like a Norton it is one.

I sense a hidden agenda. You seem to be either looking for a pat on the back for your contribution in this regard or solace for your conscience. I'm not sure which.

You might feel better if this thread was moved to the for sale section unless you feel a little more generous with your information. :p Just kidding, sort of.

My loyalty seems to be towards performance, reliability, functionality, safety and aesthetics. Originality is fleeting subject and is relative as it fits into the rest of my program. My bike was a complete bitza when I bought it. I have often said that these Nortons, completely original or not are an assembly of assemblies. The sum of the parts make up a very special and personal Norton to me. I look at it as though I would race any one 1/4 mile, 1 mile, or 100 miles. You choose! 1000 mile may be pushing it but not out of scope.

Madass140, You hijacked your own thread. I'm just following your lead.

This will occur with any resto. At some point it isnt a Norton it is a Norton
based bike or less. You have to decide where it ends. Money usually limits
the insanity. Look at the engine: Fullauto head, Maney barrels crank and cases
belt drive, then on to TTI gearbox, Devon rims and spokes, any number of front hubs and
brake systems, same with tanks mudguards seats . Where is the Norton?
The builders plate I suppose?

Where is the Norton?

in the sounds, in the feel

when you still have to man up and kick start it

in your mind, when you were young

still there, glistening steel and polished aluminum

still the most beautiful timing cover in motorcycling

still an iconic separate gearbox

still a magnificent long stroke OHV canted forward air cooled twin

and the beat goes on, and on, and on, riding a Norton Commando into the fading sunset.........

unfortunately not, the dummy axle can not be modified to act as the spacer,
Sure it can. That's how I did it on my bike back in the '70s.

Well said!

This is the very reason I now own two, first one has matching numbers, 95% original parts. Bike #2 will be a composite of parts from around the globe, but as said, still sounds, looks and feels like a Norton Commando!!

Could collect the road dust and filter for paint flecks to reconstitute for total original. Somethings Norton made are dangerous to plain destructive or deleted by bean counters. New tires, brake safety spring, under braced frame, modern clutch plates don't intrude on real Commando character as just plain needed to exist safely in real life. Maddass is providing a safety upgrade that does not alter the Commando innate character, just eliminating a known radioactive danger way more likely than the um-contraversal brake safety spring. He a very late comer to this long ago solid axle solution, but its not an off the shelf item from vendors and not all of us have machine shop or skills to do it right the first time. If ya can, ideal would be two Cdo's one that essentially sticks to the good book and another no holds barred one in a row once in a life time special parts until nothing remains of its origins.

due to improper assembly. I've never heard of any race bikes breaking rear axles.

I know of two racers who broke two piece axles and more than once - nothing to do with "improper assembly"

One was for a customer that I built an all out motor for. He broke several until he made the conversion.

the smaller diameter (left end) of my spacer is more than longer than the same section on the standard stub axle, this extra length also helps locate the thin brake locating plate which as most of you would
know is easily damaged if not located correctly over the stub axle on tightening.
modifying the standard stub axle was of course my first consideration, but I found it wasnt suitable, so a spacer
exactly how I wanted it to be and should be was made.

Doubting thomas's should review the Broken axle post, where Ken Canaga lists like 3 broken axles. i heard of hand fulls broken axles from NOC and Brit Iron lists by racers to street'rs a few years before my first one radioactively fission-ed.

Im in the Los Angeles CA area, anyone else interested in buying as a group? If not I guess I will buy one with the 30 dllr shipping cost...

WOW, talk about fast delivery!

FedEx just delivered it.

nice :)

The only thing I would wish for ( and willing to pay the difference) is for the spacer to be made from Stainless Steel.

THANKS!

JD

I have one on order too and I thought the mild steel one was simply
a pre production version. Gladly would pay for the SS.

If these solid axles only come in SS then cancel my order PERMANENTLY. SS is shear load known breakage here in past SS 'good idea' axles that also broke in time.
Fine for show queen that don't see much engine loads nor road impacts. Might as well put SS cradle bolts in too - to live on the edge of showy suspense.
