one piece rear axle (2012)

ok, that cleared it up for me... I have a 70 commando. The rear wheel hub is bolted up to the brake drum, so I never thought I could leave the drive chain and sprocket/brake drum in place on the swingarm when I removed the rest of the hub and wheel... That explains the "advantage" of that design.

Possibly on my early hub, I could have removed the bolts that fasten the hub to the drum/sprocket and left the drum, sprocket, chain, and brake assembly undisturbed, but I always took to the whole wheel off when I needed to do something like changing the tire.

Thanks for the explanation. It's clear to me now...

I went to a one piece rear axle after seeing them break on race bikes. I'm assuming Madass has them available now and if so then congrats on being the 1st to come out with it and making the upgrade available.

Regarding someones (MrRick I think) concerns about the adjusters fouling the hex on my axles, well I just been investigating this and didnt
find a problem on one of my swing arms, then I checked another swing arm and found a big difference. As you can see the adjuster block on the left swingarm is not welded flush with the axle plate. its been welded on no less than 1.7mm ( 70 thou) above the axle plate, that would account to some extent why the concern mentioned.
