Oil

i'd think that if it was a necessity here, or even just a clear cut benefit or improvement, it would have been widely adapted, cos going there isn't even a big deal,

wouldn't consider going there a big deal cos oil coolers/vernatherms are widely used in air cooled aviation piston engines, however,

adding something even with benefits also introduces new failure modes,

I think you can liken an oil cooler to an oil filter. Necessary, no. It’s accepted wisdom that engines last longer with filtered oil. Same with proper temperature oil for air cooled engines.

If you have a fairing you need a cooler... if you have a fastback with the original fibreglass tank you need a cooler... If you make fast rides across traffic intense cities or metro areas then you need a cooler.
If its hot out there ie more than 80 degrees you need a cooler... If you need peace of mind when riding then you need a cooler...

Hi everybody, this oil thread has been very interesting to me. I didn't know zddp content had been reduced since the 70s and could not understand how oils which were good in those days were no longer good enough. As I was doing an oil change today I decided on Motorex Legend 20/50 ( mineral oil API SG, SH , SJ so apparently 1000 ppm zddp ) which I bought in the factory shop and have added 2 ozs.of ZDDP Plus. Let' see how it goes.
I think it should give me 1800 ppm.

By the way, Kabel-Schmidt in Oberwil is a fantastic source for wiring and electrics for old timers. You can buy as few as 1 of anything. I mailed him at 11:00 today and he left me the ZDDP in the mail box at 12:00 with the bill. That's first class service, always is.

Have a good weekend,

Martin

Have done will do and swear on it, for decades I have run all my bikes on Castrol 20/50 But always keep the oil changes short. The Ducati bevel engines used to scrunch it up in no time and I cjanged every 1000 Kilometers not miles.
