Oil filter

I've never been a fan of K&N, especially their claims of increased HP. They're certainly better than nothing if you need the clearance in your installation.
Not disputing your statement, but when i had a CX 500 I fitted a new K&N air filter in place of the new standard filter and immediately got an extra 5 m.p.g. , this was also commented in the m/c press by other owners at the time.
Its like everything, some things work, some don't.

There’s only a benefit from fitting a less restrictive air filter if the standard filter is too restrictive.

Also- the most economical air/fuel mixture may not be the best mixture.

Explain, this doesn't make any sense.
Unless you are trying to break a m.p.g. records the standard 16:1 air/fuel mixture is the optimum for long engine life.

Because you effectively leaned (weakened) the fuel mixture.

Surely it's the throttle position that determines the amount of air drawn in?
To an extent, yes, but if your air filter was strangling the amount of air because the old filters were too fine, then without any modifications anywhere else the K&N oil damped filter wins every time.

A bit like Norton's infamous black box (allegedly :) )

When you've spent money on something you're inclined to believe it's working. You may even subconsciously operate a little diffrently in the case of something supposed to give better mileage.

Surely if the stock filter is so restrictive that the mixture is too rich then it'll lean it and mileage will improve. There's a diffrence though, between best power mixture and most economical one.

Buddy put K&N in his modern PU truck and claimed more HP and better mileage. No way! It's computer controlled and the mixture is controlled by a mass airflow sensor. There's no difference in that application between no filter and filter yet he believed it was better due marketing.

I'm not saying K&N doesn't have a place as they surely do. Marketing claims though, should be taken with a grain of salt.

I ran 2 cases of K&N oil filters through the Norton and Ducati , had zero issues with any of them .... once I noticed warnings bout removal nut I stopped fitting them and switched to hi-flo , just to be cautious .... I do like the the K&N air filters though and fit them where I can ... watched videos years ago which showed they still filter at acceptable rate when dirty .... the cleaning procedure is simple and quick and they do last a long time .....

Again - disagree with me if you want, but there are multiple articles published on this:

K&N filters (initially) offer less air flow restriction than traditional filter media because they have a much larger micron rating (i.e. larger openings). They attempt to compensate for this by oiling the media, so that it will attract dirt particles, rather than actually blocking them. If you look at flow data over time, K&N's will actually become more restrictive as the particles collect. But until that time, they will also allow more particles to pass through into the intake than traditional filter media, putting more dirt in your engine.

There is no free lunch. I definitely would not be running a K&N if you do any travelling in dusty conditions. My $0.02.

+1 Perfect!

The other phrase: "They drank the Cool-Aid"

Best.
