Found a rather decent E-start Commando with low miles, and at a reasonable asking price.
Problem..no title.
From what I understand. Here in Ohio they can be rather *Expletive deleted* without a title.
Anyone know how the seller or I might figure this out?

Bill of sale? Give numbers to the DMV and request a title search? Just a guess. Contact the ODMV and ask them the procedure.

There was a thread here earlier about getting it titled in Vermont, then transferring it to your local state. Apparently VT makes money doing this?

Shrugger -

First rule, part with no money until you talk with the Clerk of Courts for your county. I went thru this a couple years back when I resurrected my '74, and it wasn't as bad as expected. The Hancock County BMV people actually did try to be helpful, but like any government agency, they know the rules and will not deviate.

Do you or the current owner have a registration? No matter how old, having a piece of gummint-issue paperwork is a huge help. I had an old (really old - 1981!) Indiana registration, so I was able to get the state of Indiana to issue a duplicate title and registration, which Ohio would then accept as a 'transfer of title'.

Failing that, you will have to start a title application over again. I don't know how ugly that could get, but I wouldn't send anyone any money until you know FOR SURE what Ohio will charge you to get legal.

What part of Ohio are you in?

Best of luck!

I'm in Columbus. Bikes in Bowling Green. I was up there Hoping to buy a 70 basket case off him.
But it was a mismatched pile. Did find some Bonnie parts I've been looking for though.
Then I noticed way back in the corner...
He said he bought it 2 years ago and it's been sitting there since. Bill of sale only, no title. I'll have to
call him and see where he got it from.

I just went through this with a 1979 Yam DT175, street legal, never titled, never registered (according to the BMV) which I bought with a BOS a few years ago and used as a backyard bike. I learned it is against the law to sell any motor vehicle in Ohio without a title. There is a way to get one: call the BMV in Columbus and tell them your situation and they will give you a list of what you need (photos of the VIN, BOS), and an explanation of why there is no title. They will review your case but the best you can expect is for them to pass it on to a circuit court judge to decide whether or not you will get a title. You cannot go through one of the out of state title services (like Alabama) because they will not provide the service for residents of Ohio. Basically you are FUCT.

I ended up selling the bike to a neighbor with a farm and a 14-year old son, cash and a handshake.

Good luck, you will need it.
