Good on ya Fast Eddie. Now back to business.
Everything seemed fine on assembly, gears selecting well prior to fitting outer cover.
On the road however, it would shift up to third and stay there.
After several removals and re-fittings of the outer cover, I noticed a shiny mark on the concave face of the new pawl.
It had been pushing the ratchet plate as normal, but then dragging it back slightly on the return motion. This moved the ratchet plate enough to make the pawl miss the ratchet tooth on the next attempted gearchange, and just push it back into the gear that had already been selected.
I solved the problem by grinding a bit from the concave face of the pawl, with the reassuring thought in the back of my mind that if I stuffed it up, pawls are cheap and plentiful.
The result was that it now shifts like a hot knife through butter.
It's possible that the real problem may have been a worn bush in the outer cover. I thought about that belatedly. The new pawl looked no different to the old one. I didn't replace everything in the box.
The pawl gave me unexpected grief on my last gearbox rebuild.Keith1069 said:Either the selector pawl is jamming enough not to position ready for the next gear.
