I took apart my clutch for the first time ever last night. I havent used my bike tons in the last dozen years, and it has been just slightly heavy. No big deal tho, until recently where it has been heavier, sticky and tough to get in gear at times, no matter how I adjusted.

I am wondering about this stack that is in it, as it doesn't look at all like what I assumed I would see based on the book. Outside in from the right, and there are only three bronze plates and two Barnett plates. I have the other two bronze plates and three Barnetts in the spares box.

What do you guys think?

And how can I tell if the bronze plates are worn? The bronze ones are quire burnished in places, but the height of the inner ridge looks good compared to the spares.

And in all of this, they have chewed notches my clutch center. :-(

I'd guess somebody (PO?) attempted to adjust the stack height by mixing the bronze and Barnett plates?

The bronze plates hardly ever wear out so should be close to 0.125".

Want reason not to keep it if the height works and if it cleansing up OK?

It's your choice, but if the clutch has worked OK up to now then no reason to change it although I think some might say "why not use all the Barnett plates"?

Cleaning and slightly roughening the steel and bronze plates plus a new clutch centre should improve gear selection.

That is what I was thinking. Kind of a hack this is, but everythings the PO did seems to be.

Not that I am always much better...

that was a common stackup years ago. the black barnett plate's was very aggressive. can you measure the and report the thickness of the barnett plates so we can knoewif they are for an 850 or 750? my guess from you stating a heavy pull it was an 850 set. another trick is to use the thicker 750 plates in the mix to adjust the stackup for an easier pull.

Yes they are the later thin plates .125", I still have the original Barnett parts tag 524-73.
