dear All,
my bike is a commando roadster 750 year 1973 and the frame has the numbers only stamped on the red plate riveted on the steering head, but I know few of my dear friends in Italy who have them also stamped directly on the frame..
so I was wondering what is your situation and if I should double check somewhere in particular..

Are they 850 models? Or 1968-'69 750 models?

.. I am not sure.. mine is a Roadster 750 year 1973..
should I have them? .. I have never seen any while I was stripping down the frame..

A 1968 or early 1969 Commando would normally have the number stamped on the frame, as certification plates were not introduced until sometime during early-mid 1969.

So from around mid-'69-on 750 models and also the early 850 models usually have the 6-digit serial number stamped on the plate, not the frame.

850 models from around mid-1973 usually have a second non-matching *850*F1xxxxx* number stamped alongside the certification plate.

From mid-1975, the 6 digit frame number may also match the certification plate number. If so, then the "F" prefix isn't normally used.

If the frame has been repainted or powdercoated the numbers could "almost" be filled with paint etc... The stamping on my 72 frame is very shallow and would only need a few coats of paint to loose it..

Lorenzo's '73 frame wouldn't normally have any serial number stamp in that position. The number is usually stamped on the certification plate, the same as your '72 frame probably had before it was modified.

Yes,
Two of my 1969 have in the right side of the neck.
One 1971 on the main frame tube between the end of the tank and the beginning of the seat.
Ciao
