I've installed one of those rubberized drive side oil seal today, as I had a litttle oil leaking through the old one. Everything has gone right, and I've tightened the crankshaft nut to 80 ft./lb (as per manual), engaging first gear and braking rear wheel.
I've tried to start the bike to check the seal, and the gearbox was completely stuck! I could not even turn the kickstart! Clutch is working fine and I can engage all the gears, but the gearbox won't simply turn...
Any ideas about where the problem is coming from?
thanks

The key jammed into the seal? I had to trim mine... The stator clearance check OK after installation?

If the circlip on the main shaft is missing or has come out of it's groove the large washer with the counter-bore cut will bind the clutch hub to the sleeve gear effectively locking the transmission, which is cool, to some degree, if the transmission is in 4th gear and you have enough torque to exchew the first three gears.

the crankshaft nut or clutch hub nut?
if it is the clutch hub nut, check as previously stated with circlip and replace clip if necessary. clean clutch hub nut threads and use a small amount of blue loctite on the threads and only tighten to 25 ftlbs. There is some literature on this I believe on oldbritts site, as the circlip is to fragile to handle 80 ft lbs.
And that tip on the woodruf key possibly jamming into the crank drive side oil seal sounds like a good idea to inspect.

Cheers........

i have found after 40 years of riding Commando's there are a lot of design faults that were stupid. 1 mod I have done on mine is to turn up a special heavey duty washer that now goes right over that dammed tiny snap ring behind the clutch. It is now impossible for it to come out of the groove.

I've heard Jim Comstock reccomend using a bellville washer in place of the tab washer in addition to the loctite and lower torque #.

When you pull the clutch in will the kickstart push through? If so the jam up is not in the gearbox.

Glen

I dismantled it all again yesterday (sprocket and rotor) and could not see enything wrong. Assembled it all again and everything was fine, I guess the woodruff key was not propperly seated. I changed the seal again just in case the key had damaged it and no problem till now.
I've got a belleville washer in the clutch, by the way, great improvement.
Thanks!

Is this a crankshaft seal or a gearbox seal? I have engine oil in my primary , and would be interested in any upgraded crankshaft seal .
Thanks ,
Dero
