What is the length of the sliders inside the Commando front fork ?

Hello everyone!

I will take apart my forks for the first time as changing the fork oil has not made the loud metallic clunk inside the right one go away.
I have learned that if I jack up the bike high enough, I can get the sliders out and thus not have to remove the forks.

Can you tell me the length of the sliders so I can figure out if I can jack the bike up that high? I have a good floor jack and
previously jacked up the front enough to take off the wheel to replace the front tire rubber

Thanks
Dennis

Don’t know the length but tied the back end of the bike down on the bike lift and used a scissor type platform under the engine so the front end came up enough to pull the sliders off and they just cleared the lift deck, so should work for you.

With the front wheel removed there's plenty of space to pull the slider off the fork tube with the bike on the center stand. I have an early bike with the short center stand and the damper slider cleared easily on my version. I can't imagine the later model commando with the slightly taller center stand doesn't have more clearance than mine.

I did a modern high tech damper conversion to have dual circuit compression and rebound damping when I serviced my forks. At the very least you should buy the improved "stock style" damper parts from Jim Schmitt because the stock norton damper parts are crude. At least with Jim's parts you get a better fitting early design so you can tune the performance better than the stock parts even if you can only tune it with fluid viscosity choices...

Edited to add,... once you take the front wheel off the bike will be light weight up front and it will sit on the center stand and rear wheel. I never secured it with straps. I was just careful not to bump it once the wheel was off.
