Delicious ole Harley, reminds me of big ole Indian Chief I got to play on an off road on, with LH throttle to free up R trigger finger and found to be rather capable for hwy cruise to off road flying leaps like they showed in WWiI films testing these old things in glee. Thanx for the flash backs.

Look at general specs here [45 cid = ~750 cc]

Weight (fuelled): 257kg (550 lb, gross - 765 lb) Engine weight: 114 lb

Ditto hobot, reminded me of an Indian or a Crocker. Nice bike Foxy!

Ehh... Money wise you wouldn't be too far ahead.

Keep the Combat, after all it has a soul.

Because back in the hayday, Norton Commando WAS A SUPERBIKE. A snortin', screamin' crotch rocket (by then current standards) and the legend/mystique continued. They could drive by my shovelhead like it was chained to the gardrail. The "Commando" moniker helped as well, a warrior. Just like a lot of unknowing people refer to ALL sport bikes as a "Ninja", Kawi also hit the target with that handle.
It also doesn't hurt that she's drop-dead gorgeous.

Personally I don't give a sh@t if HD riders like my bike or not, I'm the one that is riding/maintaining it not them. What really bugs me is the attitude of some of them on the road. Last summer on the Blue Ridge parkway, while trying to keep up with Concours' Cdo on my little 71 Bonnie I got stuck behind a pack of the a@@holes poking along at 30 to 35 mph. They knew I was behind them and obviously knew they had just been passed by another non HD rider so they took the "nice" course of action and rode 2 abreast so as not to let me by :x Not the only time I've had something like this happen either. I like to think of it as the wildebeast mentality, when threatened by other riders they herd up and hope only the weak ones get picked off

I'm glad you got a laugh out of my experiance with a group of HD riders complaining the road ( Santiago Cny in O.C. Calif ) was " to twisty, it was funny and I road my little BSA single that day just to tease them cuz they DO talk like HD's are the only real motorcycle. Truth is though that bunch is not a typical bunch of riders, with the exception of one who does ride cross country often the rest of them haven't put 1,000 on in in ten years. They are the inexperianced guys who were scared of the turns. Not a typical HD group at all.

I've often looked at Harley Sportsters and wondered about building a n XR750TT replica out of one. I've never been able to figure out what heads apart from original XR750 could be used to get two carburettors onto one of those motors. It seems that the later sportsters dont shag timing side bearings anymore, and you can even buy decent CR gearboxes for them. It would be an expensive exercise, but might be worth it. I believe the Buell is a half decent motorcycle, something similar with a less idiotic frame, might not be all bad ? You certainly wouldn't use the early sportster frame ! I can understand guys riding 'full dresser' Harleys, but those half chopper things - what is that ? What a bloody waste of space ? I was looking at a kid's bike up at my mate's place last week It was a chopper, but the motor was really lovely. It was 1500cc, with NC machined heads and all the good bits in it. My mate was a bit taken aback when I said it was a waste of a good motor. Why would you put something with that sort of performance into a bad handling rigid framed chopper ? - it doesn't make sense ! ! !

New for 2013 HD XR1200X, no wait they stopped making them.

http://forums.cycleworld.com/showthread.php?t=252549

The only bike in their current lineup close to a standard let alone with any sport in it. It's a crying shame.

The wife made a deal with me, one year after the kids go to school full time and I am working full time, I can use her 20% discount
and buy a NEW bike. My youngest starts kindergarden next fall, I liked this idea.

The problem is HD canned Buell, Sold Aprilla and Now canned the XR1200X.
The only bike left I like is the VROD, I test rode a few, I like it, but I don't see using it much, and they will probably ax that soon.

I am 35 years old, I don't tour the country and I am not in a gang. I hate chrome trinkets and leather fringe. I ride mostly in town and errands. So seat comfort is a non issue.
I don't need a recliner on wheels.
There is nothing left. They have wiped out yet another segment. Good going.

I don't know why they bother with models like that. It's cool bike, one I'd like to own, but the dealers have no interest in them or V-Rods. In the last year, I was kind of nosing around, thinking about something newish, that was a little easier on my arthritic left shoulder. I was interested in the Street Rod with conventional riding position, and the XR1200X in the Harley line-up. Still a few Street rods around new, and with very low miles at dealers. One local dealer had a yellow 2006 Street Rod on their show floor, brand new. I asked a few questions, and all they could tell me is what a failure the bike was because of the riding position and seat height. The very things I liked. They never took my name, and showed no interest in me. It's still sitting there. Another dealer had a leftover 2011 XR1200X on their website, and wouldn't give a price, but said it had a "speciaL' price, and to e-mail for that price. So I did, and never heard back. About a week later, I got some sort of automated response from them, telling me how important I was as a customer, yada, yada, yada, and their sales people would be getting in touch with me. Well, that was in March, and it's October, and I'm still waiting. These are about the same reactions me and a friend got when we stopped in to look at Buells 10 plus years ago. Ended up selling my 2001 Speed Triple and bought a 6,000 mile R1150R roadster. I was a buyer, ready to go, and the dealers, could not, or would not make any type of effort with me. I always chuckle when I see an interview with some Harley suit in a bike mag, talking about how they need to expand their markets, appeal to non big twin buyers and younger folks. They wouldn't know how to expand their market if they had free motorcycles. Their sales "force" would blow that assignment, too.

Harley didn't own Aprilia...but they did own MV Agusta which they did sell recently.....They had no business buying them in the first place....MV was way out of H-D's league and they sold them for mere pennies on the dollar. Good move Willie G!

Aprilla, MV Agusta, I got confused. I knew it was one of them.

As for the Dealer network. They go for factory training on sales and service., Usually at the Juno Ave. Facility.

But once back at their own place they do what they want. Still the old boys mentality. Not good business sense.
I have gone into the dealer in town and have had a similar experience. I was too young and don't have any tattoos.
Never said a word to me. Funny thing is I have the money in the bank to buy just about any bike in there.

Well I decided that there was going to be no way that I was going to give up my Norton.... so I just bought the cop bike.

It's a lot different than a Norton..... but I have always like the police bikes...and you can never have too many motorcycles.

Wise choice. Now if we catch you drinking the Kool Aid we will ship you off to Hobot for a month.

Aw shucks Brent some us southern boys also like the slow easy rhythms of riding fat gals too. Besides hicks can tell close hidden family relations at a glance no matter the name or denials, so really what the big deal, kissing cousins with iron barrels and separate tranny ancient pushrod cycle. Can fit a sports car tire for the advantages of their 'dark side' ride.

i'd paint on POLITE on fender and bags for the ease to part traffic too, til stopped by police.

I had a look at the pic of the XR1200X. I wonder why Harley didn't build on their tradition ? Obviously they are ashamed of the XR750 ? I raced against the one Don Emde brought t o Australia in the early seventies. It was quite a respectablt bike, except it shagged the timing side bearing and couldn't race in the big ra ce on the Sunday. The XR1200X looks great, but you have to wonder at the mentality of a designer who would fit that tank and handle bars. A racing tank and drop bars would really make it into a great looking bike. I believe you Yanks are obsessed with choppers - they would have to be the worst style of bike ever invented !

The XR750TT is the only respectable bike that Harley Davidson ever manufactured, except when they rebadged the aermacchis :

Whoa there slow them doggies down. I may not be the biggest H.D. Fan but just because you don't like the big land yaught type of bike doesn't mean anything other than it's not your style. I have to addmit a lot of the parts look like stuff from a farm machine but hey, that's the big American way! I used to think all American bikes were junk but I spend a lot of time in a Indian restoration shop & have learned to have a high regaurd for thier quality which at that time was far above most other bike makers, Indian heat treated and hardened metal parts that most other companies didn't & as such a lot of 80 year old parts are still in perfect condition after years of use and I think old Harleys from the 30's are as beautiful as anything out of those from the pond beyond.

I owned two 500cc Indians when I was a kid, and they were a beautiful bike, the engineering was superb, and I liked the style of bike. The later Harleys which look like choppers are an insult - they are neither fish nor fowl. I could own and love a 'full dresser' Harley, but I would never try to kid myself there is anything sporty about them. As a sports bike the Buell is a great concept, but the frame looks really bad, the tube version has loops on loops, and the beam version just looks heavy and ugly. I know you guys hate the British and Italians, but have a good look at their designs and you just might learn something. I would never own a chopper and I don't care how much chrome and coloured anodising it might have. It is much more important to me to have my bike functional and handling right, - if you do that with your bike, it will also look right ! If you have to be an 'Easy Rider' to express your need for freedom, there is something wrong with you. It went out as a fashion statement in the seventies.
There is a term you Yanks invented, it is called 'value analysis'. Perhaps you should practice what you preach when you build motorcycles ? With the XR750TT, you almost got it right but the frame was a stinker. The Buell proved you have the ability to build an exciting sports bike, sadly it seems to have come to a dead end. The man who put that tank and handle bars on the XR1200X should be sacked !

When did anyone suggest that? Hate the British on a Norton site?
