Norvil Rearsets

I'm researching rear set option currently ..
  1. With the Norvil kits that uses reversed gear-lever how does the lever navigate around the kick start so it doesn't look like a dogs dinner??? does some kind soul have a photo of the set up please.
  2. What are the pros & cons of the full Norvil kit over the reversed lever option.... apart from the obvious one?
  3. What is the best gear-lever to used if the revered lever set up is used.... RGM or Norvil
  4. I take it the best option for Kick start option with the Norvil kit is the T16o design
Thank you

I believe the reversed selector reaches out to the side of the Kickstarter.

I like the Norvil style because it retains the shift pattern. There are other rearset kits that also retain the pattern.

I feel the quality of the Norvil kit is higher than the RGM but it’s strictly a matter of preference.

Rearsets on a AMC box are always a compromise because of the location of the kickstarter.

Care is required to ensure you’re talking about what you intend to talk about here !

By rights ‘Norvil Reasets’ are the rearsets fitted to the Norvil production racers. These had an extended kick start lever and a reversed gear lever. These can usually be put together by parts sold by AN.

When Swoosh refers to Norvil Rearsets, he’s talking about the rearsets purchased from Norvil Motorcycles. These are NOT as per the production racers design. These have a linkage and a ‘wrap around’ gear lever (wraps around the kickstart).

The T160 kick start lever is not suitable for use with the Norvil Motorcycles wrap around gear lever.

IMHO, having purchased several sets of rearsets, the best off the shelf fitment for a bike using a kick start and stock exhausts is the cNw rearsets in conjunction with a T160 style kick start.

A brief history of my rearsets...

Norvil Motorcycles wrap around rearsets with linkage and stock kick start. I could never get the kickstart or gear lever where I wanted them:

cNw rearsets with T160 kick start. This works really well, although the stock box does dictate long lever travel:

cNw rearsets on home made plate (no exhaust mounts required):

Current set up, NYC rearsets components, home made mount and linkage, modified stock kickstart. The gear pedal pivots on the footrest, which gives a more natural ark when changing gear. The TTI box offers much reduced gear lever travel too. I have no need for exhaust mounts so made minimal mount brackets. It all works very well:

FWIW

My set with Don's (madass) rear sets and a MKIII kick start lever. I have no issues with toe clearance or gear lever access, but ergonomics are different for everyone. My biggest issue is scraping the back of my knee whilst kicking it over with the SS headers.

I Believe Don's rearsets are a copy of the Dunstall setup?
One difference being the originals had a tubular shift lever hoop whereas Don's are cast.
I have a set of original ones here which will be going on my Combat when I can get to it...

The loop on Don’s looks different to the loop on my problematic Norvil Motorcycles ones...

No the VERY original Dunstall rearsets had a cast steel shift lever but apparently not for long as they were changed
to the common tube type. I was lucky enough to get hold of an original cast one so I cast mine the same but in 316 Stainless.
For the brake pedal I got a Dunstall fabricated tube one , filled in the holes etc and cast it in A356 Hi Tensile alloy

I had two pairs of Dunstall rearsets for a Kawasaki H1 and I believe they had cast brake pedals.

I still maintain mine are very original - just not very early ones ;)
Actually good to know that your gear lever is a direct copy, and in a not-so-brittle material

I have had both the cast and tube type rear set shift levers, as well as the billet NY Norton ones. The benefit of the tube type over the cast is rigidity - there is much less flex in the tube type, which gives a more positive feel.

Sorry, my post was unclear.

The tube type rear sets I had were an unkown make I got as spares when I purchased my bike about 30 years ago and that I had on it for a LONG time.

I sold them after buying NY Norton sets for my resto mod.

I dont have a pic of the cast ones (not Dunstall) at work. Can take them when I get home.

Those look like possibly RGM rearsets.

These are Don's rear sets.

The shifter lever is slightly too long from the footpeg to the shifter rubber for my 10.5 US foot so it is always shifting from the ball of the heel on the toe. Also, it is bendy. I have had hand bend the lever back into position a few times now.

I think mine have an issue in the torsional stiffness. When you look from the side, it is thick. When you look from the top, you see it is thin. And the vertical thickness varies along the arc, so that what happens is the toe piece ends bending upward at the outside over time.

Maybe that is part why Dunstall went to a tube?

That said, the sold brake lever is much better than the others I have had. You can literally stand on it.
