Very new motorcycle tinkerer here.

How do you do simple clutch adjustments on a Norton Commando?

Specifically right now the clutch is slipping in the higher revs or when you get on it. Happens when it is cold or warmed up and more so in 2nd, 3rd, 4th gears.

Thanks everyone.

It's all in the manual and basic. Back off the handlebar adjuster fully , open primary clutch adjuster cap , loosen adj. nut with socket, flat head screwdriver to screw in until resistance just felt ,then screw outwards a tad so it's no longer touching the pushrod, retighten nut ,then handlebar readjustment. But the clutch is probably slipping due to gearbox oil contamination or bad crankseal flooding the primary in oil . Unscrew the primary oil level indicator and if a ton of oil streams out you need a new seal. And that means sprocket puller and special clutch tool ,both of which you should get anyways. There is an inexpensive seal kit for the gearbox pushrod oil-drifting issue too. Good luck.

In my experience, if the crank seal has gone then the clutch will drag as well as slip. If it's slipping around maximum torque (4500 rpm or so) then a good scrub of the plates in degreaser will provide a cure for a reasonable period. You're going to need a clutch spring compressor (purchased or home-made) to investigate. These are pretty standard symptoms.

The 'Riders Handbook' has a very good description and method. Follow it precisely and if it doesn't work, look at the atlantic green site. You'll need to check all your components in that case.

It 's the same as adjusting the clutch on any manual situation in theory. Use the same mind set as an old pickup truck. Follow the manual, you'll be good to go.
