I found a place that has 100% pure octane (charging $12 a gallon) and have also ordered a new alloy tank. Although it looks like the tank has been lined.

Depends on what it was / is lined with Cream tank liner isn't that good at all. Caswell's is much better but you made the right choice by getting a new tank. No matter what we all say and it is constructive, your bike looks great and you will have a ball riding it. The combined knowledge of the group is a great tool use it often.
Hope to meet you on the road sometime.

That's a nice looking ride.
Enjoy it................

Great looking bike. You may want to consider purchasing and fitting a modern headsteady. In my experience it's just a matter of time before that original stamped metal piece decides to fracture , and it will occur whilst driving the bike.

As far as the headsteady, would you recommend this one?
taylor-commando-head-steady-t9192.html

Only if you ride your Commando every now and then or lubricate the small open ball joints every 100 mls. I did about 2000mls on this Taylor headsteady when an increasing rattling sound pointed me at the completely worn out ball joints. Waste of money! Best option is the CNW/Comstock headsteady (downside: very expensive!)
